“I’ve already told you, doc, I’m not allergic to anything. I think you should do another ECG on me.”

“Lorenzo, have you recently gotten yourself a pet cat?” the doctor asked.

“No, I haven’t fuckinggotten myself a pet cat,” I snarled, not liking where this conversation was going. My hand automatically twitched as it rested on my gun holster which was lying by my side on the examination bench.

The doctor took a step back. “Er…what I meant was…have you recently, perhaps, bought your daughter…or son…a pet cat?”

“No,” I snapped. “I wouldn’t be so stupid.”

The doctor took a swallow. “Have you, maybe, gotten yourself—I mean, your children—a pet which is an animal from the cat family, like a…lion or tiger?”

He looked extremely uncomfortable and was getting on my nerves, so I put him out of his misery. “No. But my wife, on the other hand, has no such sense. She’sbrought a cat into my home.”

“Ah, there we have it,” the doctor said in relief. “You’ve had an asthma attack due to your allergy to cats.”

“I don’t have asthma,” I declared. “I’m a fucking Made Man.”

The doctor looked over the top of his glasses at me. “Lorenzo, it clearly says on your medical records that you are asthmatic, and I know that I, personally, have also prescribed you inhalers in the past.” He was talking to me like I was an errant schoolboy.

“I barely have asthma,” I argued. “It doesn’t bother me at all. And these pains have been different to what I’ve had in the past.”

“Symptoms have flared up due to your airways becoming inflamed as a result of your cat allergy. I always advise my asthmatic patients that they really should avoid having pets in their home,” the doctor continued in a lecturing tone.

“It wasn’t my goddamn idea to have Wilbur in our home!”

The doctor retreated further away from me as he ran through the treatment options, keeping his gaze carefully fixed on me and my weapon. “I’ll prescribe you a course of prednisolone which will bring down the inflammation in your airways and bring your breathing back to normal.”

As the doctor ran through the other medications, I quietly seethed.

“Um…can I ask, Lorenzo, is ‘Wilbur’ a domesticated pet, or is he…a wildcat?”

I glared at him.

He carried on quickly. “It’s just that I have to let you know, er, that I don’t feel comfortable doing house calls to homes containing wild animals like lions, tigers—”

“Get the fuck out!” I roared.

He hurried through the door. “I’ll just go and explain the situation to Mrs. Marchiano,” he called over his shoulder.

“You do that and then tell her I want to see her,” I growled.

I tried to get my temper under control while I waited for Anni to make an appearance.

I didn’t have to wait long.

“Hi Lorenzo!” She came into the room, all relaxed and smiling.

A nurse followed her in. “Hi Mr. Marchiano,” the nurse purred. “The doctor asked me to bring in your medication for you.” She fluttered her eyelashes at me as she passed me some pills and a cup of water.

She began to tuck the sheets around me, letting her hand linger too long by my thigh, earning her a dark look from Anni.

“Is there anything else I can get you?” the nurse asked with a seductive smile.

“No. I just want to get out of here.”

“I’ll get your prescription filled for you and then you’ll be all set to go. Where are you headed next?”

“Work,” I said abruptly.
