“How long is your shift?” His question throws me a bit.

“I only work the morning on the weekends because of Mela.”

“What if, instead of her waiting for you, I… took her shopping?” Fear sparks to life inside me. I gulp and begin to squirm in my chair. “I… I’ll bring her back,” he grits out through clenched teeth as we pull up to the curb outside the diner I work at. I turn back to face Mela and when she beams at me I melt.

“Meelz?”

“Yes?”

“W-would you like to spend the day with King?” Her little brows furrow as she looks between me and King, who is now looking at her as well with a warm smile on his face.

“Will you come?” I shake my head as I reach back and brush my knuckles over her cheek.

“I can’t, baby girl. I have to work.” A cunning look enters her eyes.

“So, I can get my tea party set?” I chuckle and nod.

“Yeah, baby, a couple more shifts, then we can go get it.”

“Okay, I go with King.” I spy him out of the corner of my eye and flinch when she calls him by his name. I smile and bid her goodbye, then ask King if I can have a word outside with him. I move to the curb and wait for him to join me. He shoves his hands in his pockets and I stand here awkward as fuck, not sure how to start this conversation.

“What’s up?” he prompts. I release a whoosh of air before I meet his gaze.

“I-I know this is a fucked-up situation but I just wanted to thank you for yesterday and not announcing who… you are to her.” He nods but I can see in his eyes he has something to say.

“I want her to know, Allison, soon. I’m not her friend. I’m her father and she has a right to know.” I steel my spine and clench my hands into fists at my sides.

“Are you gonna take off and leave her? Will you be present for school days? What about when she’s sick and cries all day, can you hack that? Because if you can’t—” He cuts me off when he strikes out, grips my face and slams his lips against mine. Like fucking putty I melt into him. He shouldn’t have this effect on me, I don’t even know him and for fuck’s sake, he is my dead sister’s ex and the father to Amelia! I push against his chest and he pulls back with a cocky grin on his face. I want to smack the look right off.

“Now that shut you up.” I glower at him while he just chuckles. “We can talk about this shit tonight, okay?”

“Okay,” I mutter as I storm past him but he calls out making me pause.

“Luka will be here with you today. You won’t see him but he will be around.” My eyes widen in surprise. “Don’t look so shocked, cherry pie, you’re important to Mela so that makes you important to me.” I hate that my heart skips a beat hearing him say that. I nod like a dick and quickly head into work.

My shift has dragged on and Kevin has been a royal pain in my ass all day. Apparently Sally said he saw me kissing King. I don’t know how me kissing King would cause him to be a dick when I have made it clear I have no interest in him. I’ve passed him twice today to head into the kitchen and the sick prick has grabbed my ass. If I didn’t need this job so badly, I would knee him in the fucking balls and walk out!

“Allison!” his voice booms across the busy diner and has me cringing. I smile to the couple whose order I just took and quickly scurry behind the counter to meet him.

“What’s wrong?” He narrows his beady eyes at me. His breath huffs out and fans across my face causing me to have to fight the gag from the stench of cigarettes.

“Want to tell me why you have a guy in your section who hasn’t placed a single order?” I furrow my brow and follow his gaze to a man who is dressed impeccably in a suit and sticks out, I shake my head.

“I didn’t see him, I’ll go now.” As I turn to walk over to the man Kevin slaps my ass and I have to grit my teeth or risk screaming at him. As I head toward the man, I find his disapproving stare on Kev. I hate that most people here just saw what he did. I know I’m red from shame by the time I reach his table. I pull out my pad and pen and say,

“What can I get you, sir?” I keep my gaze down, something about this guy has me feeling on edge.

“You can take a seat?” I slowly lift my gaze to his and find his piercing stare looking right at me.

“Why?” A slow smirk graces his handsome face.

“Because, shit is about to go down and I think you should have a front seat to the drama.” Before I can answer him the front door to the diner slams open and bangs so loudly it draws everyone’s attention. I gape at the sight of King, Knight and some other guy storming in here with angry looks on their faces. I follow King’s line of sight to Kevin and my mouth drops open.

“Hey, you break that door—” Kevin doesn’t get a chance to finish what he is saying before King grips the front of his shirt and punches him in the face. I scream and try to dart forward but the man grips my arm. I turn back to him and try to yank free.

“He’s going to get arrested,” I shout at the man.
