Page 38 of Was I Ever Real

It makes me want to toy with her even more. The urge is curling itself around my spine demanding to be heard. It grips my nerve endings, threatening to lobotomize me if I don’t comply. And quick.

“Oh?” I say, my tone swimming in mockery just like hers was. “Off to finally tell your best friend whose cock you're warming at night?”

She glares at me with so much venom that I salivate at the sight. “That would be a lie now wouldn’t it?”

“For now.”

“Forever, asshole.”

My laugh is near damn diabolical.

“Keep telling yourself that.”

She narrows her gaze, giving me another one of her classic eye rolls, and turns to leave but I reach over the desk and snatch her wrist.

“Not so fast, darling,” I drawl.

She tries to fight me, but my fingers dig into her skin the harder she attempts to shake me free. “What the hell do you want now?” she says through gritted teeth.

“I need you to stay for the meeting.” I let go of her arm and my dick twitches when she keeps still, listening for once, looking back at me quizzically. I make a show of checking my watch. “Should start any minute now actually.”

“Why?” Is all she manages to say. She’s smart enough to know there’s a catch and I smile bright and wide while I let her stew in the anxiety of the unknown for a little while longer.

“The crew hasn’t met my wife yet. Perfect time for an introduction.”

Fire flashes behind her eyes. “This isn’t a cotillion, I don’t need to be introducedlike some fucking prized cattle.” Her words are packed with such malice that I’m quite literally being reborn while bathing in the sound of it.

I decide to taunt her even further. “A prized toy, more like.”

I can see the insults take form in the curl of her tongue and the rise of her chest, but we’re interrupted by Steven and Diego walking into the study before I have the pleasure to hear them come out of her mouth. Both our heads snap to the door.

The two stutter to a stop, their eyes quickly assessing the situation and more specifically my facial expressions. When they don’t find a hint of me promising them a swift death if they don’t get the hell out, they move further into the room.

“Hey boss,” Diego says, heading towards the fireplace and leaning his elbow atop of the mantle. I give him a quick nod but nothing else. He still has some lingering bruises on his face from when I snapped on him a couple weeks ago.

I lack the empathy to care.

Steven follows behind and stands close to him while a few more of my men walk into the room.

Lenix’s eyes are now back on mine. I can tell she’s quickly realizing she’s trapped. She knows who I am—what I do. I might allow her push-backs when we’re alone but she knows she can’t pull that kind of shit in front of my crew. The power dynamics have suddenly shifted in my favor and she looks like a wild animal being cornered. And I’m about to take full fucking advantage.

My lips curl in what is most likely a feral grin and reach my hand out to her, leading Lilith straight to hell. From the corner of my eyes, I can tell the room is filling up and most of the people meant to be here have arrived—including Byzantine. I feel his eyes bore into me.

I ignore him. Especially when Lenix gently places her hand in mine and I coax her to approach the chair where I’m still sitting. Her eyes promise sweet retribution.

But for now, she’s all fucking mine.

“Everyone,” I say, my eyes still locked to hers. “This is Lenix.” With a hard tug of her arm, I knock her off balance and she lands on my lap with a small oomph. “My wife.”

I can feel the shock crackle around the room and I’m deranged enough to revel in it. I finally turn my gaze to Byzantine, and find his brows furrowed. He knows I’m full of shit, but he wouldn’t dream of saying anything in front of everyone. I give him a smirk and a wink.

“Byzantine. You can man the meeting today.”

For a few seconds, he stays silent, presumably taking in the whole near-mirage of me and Lenix in front of him. Finally, he shrugs his shoulders, stepping into the role of my second-in-command effortlessly, positioning himself close to the door.

When he begins to speak, all of the attention turns to him, away from us. Lenix hasn’t moved an inch since I placed her where I wanted her. But then her lips begin to creep closer to my ear, and I fight a full body shiver when I feel her hot breath on my skin as she says in a seething tone, “I’m going to kill you Connor.”

I don’t think I’ve ever been this hard in my goddamn life. Should it be slightly alarming that what got me here was Lenix threatening to kill me? Not really.
