“You really think he’d go that far, after all the money he’s made off us?”

“Yes. Without a doubt. He’s never going to just be ok with us leaving. Especially not me. If he had a way to get at me, he’s going to take it,”I said.

The idea made my stomach churn, and I knew Gideon understood my concerns. He nodded and rubbed his hand over his face. Looking closer, and I could see Gideon was exhausted and cracking at the edges.

“This was the best way I could think to get the resources, but without Randy finding out…hopefully,”I said, tacking on the last word, because I knew nothing was guaranteed.

“So you’re seeing Cain now?”

I nodded in response, as I turned to go to the hall closet. I found a dark sweatshirt and pulled it from a hanger. When I slipped it over my head, I was immediately hit with lavender and my head swam for a moment. I was confused until I remembered Brooklyn grabbing the sweatshirt once when she was naked downstairs. It had never been washed, because I liked having her smell on it. I held the fabric to my nose and breathed deep.

“Need backup?”Gideon asked from behind me.

“Stay close to your phone, just in case. I don’t think Cain will double cross me straight off. But there’s no knowing later. He’s meeting me at Club 4 now, since we’re closed tonight.”

Gideon nodded, and I jogged to the mudroom for my keys and then into the garage to get into my Tesla. I was out of the garage before the door had fully opened, racing down toward the gate. Gideon must have opened it for me because I didn’t even have to slow when I got there.

At the club, I pulled into one of my normal spaces, noting the strange Dodge Charger sitting in Aiden’s spot. When I got out of my car, the door of the Charger opened and out stepped a much older Cain.

His face was the same, but there were lines that hadn’t existed since the last time I had seen him. His hair was colored blue and currently sticking straight up in a mohawk. His arms were completely covered in tattoos, and he had a skull across his throat. When he saw me, his face lit up in a huge smile, bringing my attention to the lip ring on his bottom lip.

“You do not look like a richy rich,”Cain said.

“I still own a few pairs of sweatpants,”I said with a grin, holding out my hand to him.

Cain grabbed my hand and yanked me in for a one arm hug. When we stepped back, I studied his face and couldn’t detect any deception behind his eyes.

“Let’s move this reunion inside,”I said.

Cain nodded and shoved his hands into his jean pockets. He was dressed opposite of my sweats, in dark jeans, a white v-neck and black shit kicker boots. His whole look looked relaxed but dark at the same time, and I wondered if Cain was the only man I knew that could pull it off that way.

Inside the Club, I climbed the stairs to the top floor with Cain behind me. Inside, the main lights were on, with a cleaning crew working on the dance floor. One person glanced up and wavedwhen they saw me. Cain took a moment to look around the building and whistled low.

“Look at this place. Fancy shit, Jaxon.”

“It’s done the job,”I replied.

“More than that, I’m sure,”he said.

I continued walking through the owners VIP level to the hall that held our offices. I took him into mine, flipping on the light and immediately went to close the curtains on the window that looked over the dance floor. Cain walked around, slowly taking in the photos I had on my desk and the awards we had received for our philanthropy work.

When I moved behind my desk, I motioned for Cain to have a seat, and he did with a grin. I wasn’t sure where to start, so I leaned back and rubbed my eyes roughly.

“What is the deal, brother?”Cain asked.

The word brother surprised me, and I sat up and looked at him suddenly. His face was filled with concern, no malice, no humor. For a moment, I felt a pang of regret for not trusting him more and bringing him with us to get him out of the life. But I pushed it away. If Cain hadn’t still been in the life, I wouldn’t have had anyone to call to help.

“I need your help. I don’t have anyone else to turn to,”I said.

“Ok. Tell me what’s happening, and I’ll tell you if I can help.”

“First. Are you still in the business under my dad?”I asked.

A brief flash of anger crossed his face before he answered.“Unfortunately. It pays the bills right now. But I’m always keeping an eye out. Why?”

“This can’t get back to my father. Before I tell you anything, I need to know I can trust you.”

“You can trust me, just like I trusted you with my damn Spiderman. That was never the same again.”
