I motioned for her to walk ahead of me, up the stairs, as I put away my knife. I wasn’t worried about handling Missy in a hand to hand attack. Her purse in my hand was too small to hide any sort of weapon, and I was sure Cain checked for that before throwing it to the side. We appeared in the house again and Missy blinked against the bright sunlight that had started to shine through the clean windows.

Cain and his man both stood in the living room, watching us closely. When Missy looked their way, she stepped back rapidly, running into my chest. Cain let a smile that could only be described as psychotic appear on his face. Missy tried to continue her retreat, but I put my hands on her shoulders and pushed her through the kitchen, toward the backdoor. I knew we needed to get to the cars. She turned suddenly and tried to hug me, but I side stepped her before she could touch me.

“Don’t touch me.”I pushed her again, sending her stumbling back, her arms pinwheeling to keep herself from falling.

“Muscle man, my Gideon. Please. We can fix all of this. We won’t go back to what we had before. We would be so much better than that now.”Missy put out her uninjured hand, begging me to take it.

When I looked at her now, I felt nothing but a twisted sickness in my gut. There were no pleasant memories or what ifs in my mind. Our time with Missy had been turbulent, dark, and dangerous. Even leaving out the drug use, Missy had mybrothers and me at a point where we almost lost each other while we lost ourselves. She cut down the self confidence that grew in young men, creating shells that we had to work hard to recover from.

“No. Outside, get in the car,”I finally said.

Her face went blank, all emotion leaving it, in a move that was almost theatrical. Turning on her heel, she stomped toward the backdoor. I unlocked Cain’s cars and pointed to the passenger seat. She got in with a huff and I slammed the door. After I slid into the driver’s seat, I locked the doors to ensure she didn’t try to jump out and take off. She wouldn’t get far, but I wasn’t in the mood to delay and chase her.

I drove straight from the house to the police station, where I was fairly certain Lee would be working. Circling to the back parking lot, I found an open spot that wasn’t noticeable and pulled in. After shutting off the engine, I gripped the steering wheel tightly.

“You understand I’m turning you over to the police for your involvement in Brooklyn’s kidnapping.”

“You could just let me go. I already told you what you wanted to know,”Missy said.

“You deserve to be punished for what you’ve done.”My fingers tighten on the wheel, my knuckles turning white, as I tried not to think about choking the life out of her myself.

“Don’t you think this was enough?”Missy’s voice rose to a shriek as she motioned to her mangled pinky.

“No, no I don’t. And you won’t be telling the police how that actually happened. You fell. That’s the answer when they ask. Are we clear?”I finally risked a glance at her.

Missy’s face was screwed up in fury. No longer were we playing the game of cat and mouse, where she was sure she could win one of us over. Now, the gloves were off and the monster wason the surface, ready to take a piece of anyone in its way. Her eyes narrowed as she met my gaze.

“Why…would…I…do…that?”Her voice was a low hiss.

Suddenly, her uninjured hand snapped out, and she tried to slap me. I saw the move moment before she made it and was able to grip her small wrist in my hand and I began to squeeze. Some of the fight left Missy’s face as the pain registered and she squeaked.

“Are we clear?”I repeated my question.

After a long moment of silence, Missy finally replied,“Fine.”

I didn’t release her immediately. Instead, I pulled her wrist toward me, causing her body to push against her seatbelt.

“If so much of a word is whispered about what happened or about my brothers and I, well, it won’t be hard to get to you in jail. You know we know people.”I glared, all the hate and anger in me released for her to actually see now.

Missy’s throat worked as she tried to swallow. I knew she was trying to come up with a snappy comeback, but I wasn’t waiting for it. I tossed her hand away from me, so hard that he smacked into the car door with a thud. Unlocking the car doors, I went around to her door quickly, to prevent her from trying anything.

I kept the grip on her upper arm as we walked into the station. The cop at the front desk eyed us warily, but I asked for Lee by full name and title. Lee came from the back offices and his eyes widened when he saw me and the woman I was holding.

“Lee, you’ll want to arrest this woman for the kidnapping of Brooklyn Reeves.”

Chapter

Thirty-Three

Cain

I wasn’tsure why I was insisting on staying in the search for Brooklyn. Missy had given the Knights enough information to go on without my continued help. But I couldn’t help but picture Brooklyn’s smiling face in my mind. Something inside my gut wouldn’t let me walk away without seeing her safely away from the bastard that took her.

When I agreed to help Jaxon, I had pulled out all the stops in researching and Brooklyn’s face was splashed all over her non-profit website. I could tell she held a lot of inner turmoil and pain, her smile never completely full or her eyes not reflecting the same emotion. It made me feel drawn to her, even though I knew that wasn’t a good thing.

The kitchen of what I called my work house was full of the quiet wrath the Knights seemed to have simmering just below their skin. Losing Brooklyn was breaking them in ways I didn’t think they spoke about. Jaxon leaned against the kitchen counter, his arms crossed tightly across his chest. Aiden hadn’t stopped pacing since we came out of the basement. Oliver sat at the small kitchen table with his head in his hands.

I nodded to my man that was still there and motioned for him to follow me. Giving him the address Missy had told us, I sent him to recon before we could meet him. After he left, I brought my laptop to the kitchen table. I had long set up my equipment to work in the dark places of the internet, and could work my way through most firewalls to find information I needed.
