“Then you aren’t sewing one stitch into her skin, are we clear?”Aiden was right next to me now, his hands on the plastic railing, his grip causing the material to squeal.

“I’m not sure who you think you are, but you can’t decide on my patient’s medical treatment.”I had to give the doctor credit. I couldn’t imagine anyone else standing up to Aiden when he was being so imposing.

“We need the best plastic surgeon in the city. I don’t give a shit how expensive, we’ll pay whatever we need. And that will be the only person putting stitches into her. Close it for now, without anything that will scar,”Aiden immediately said.

The doctor sputtered and looked to the nurse, but there was no support there. She looked at Aiden again, looking as if she was going to continue to argue. But Aiden held up his hand, shutting her up before she was able to open her mouth.

“There is no fucking way I’ll sit by and have her living with that on her body. You get to calling who you need to.”Aiden crossed his arms across his chest, staring down at the doctor.

She looked down at me and I nodded, not making eye contact with anyone, but showing my agreement with Aiden. If Lyle’s brand could be removed and leave me without more scars to live with, I wanted that. The doctor sighed and leaned down near my ear, clearly trying to have a private conversation with just me.

“I’m sorry because I need to ask a question and you may want to be alone for the conversation.”

I knew what she wanted to ask me, what tests were probably necessary, the invasion of my body that was going to continue.

Without looking up, I took a deep breath, to force a few words through my injured throat,“Please leave.”

Chapter

Thirty-Seven

For a moment,I wasn’t sure who Brooklyn was speaking to. She wouldn’t look at any of us. My brothers and I all stood and stared at her. The doctor, who seemed to know something we didn’t, stood next to her and wasn’t budging. The rush of anger that I felt wasn’t fair, I knew, but I couldn’t help it.

“Sweetheart, let us help,”Aiden said.

Brooklyn didn’t look up at him, just shook her head.

“You can’t. Please go.”Her voice was a small whisper, the only sound she seemed to be able to make without much pain.

The bruises ringing her throat, the cuts on her leg, the injuries we hadn’t seen yet, made me want to find Lyle and tear him limb from limb. In the same thought, I wanted to crawl into the small hospital bed with Brooklyn and cradle her bruised body against mine, and try to heal everything for her. Now, she was telling us to leave her again.

Without a word, I turned and grabbed the door handle, yanking it with more strength than necessary. The hospital door bounced off the wall with a slam and I stalked out without looking back. Jaxon called my name, but I didn’t slow until I got to the elevator and was stabbing the down button.

All three of my brothers arrived before the elevator did and we piled in together. On the ground floor, we stood aimlessly, none of us really sure what we were supposed to do now.

“I’m going to move Cain’s car,”Jaxon murmured before walking back into the night.

Aiden scrubbed a hand over his face, exhaustion seeping into his features as he leaned against the wall in the waiting room. Gideon collapsed into a chair.

“Did you see that?”Gideon’s voice was strained.

“We all fucking saw it,”Aiden said.

I didn’t respond, just started to pace back and forth between the chairs. Seeing the injuries to Brooklyn made bile rise in my throat. The condition she was in told me that Lyle was likely not planning on letting her go or live any normal life. He wanted a prisoner, and he treated her like one.

“Why do you think she wants us to leave her again?”My voice was more demanding than I meant for it to be.

“I’m afraid there’s more she doesn’t want us to know,”Gideon said.

Jaxon entered the hospital again, this time with Cain in tow. I stopped pacing long enough to hear him tell us what happened at the warehouse.

“I had my guys give me a ride over after we saw the cops go into the warehouse. They brought out the three guys we handled. No sign of Lyle. I didn’t hang out to chat with them. I wouldn’t say we have that kinda relationship, yeah? Where’s Brooklyn? She getting tests or something?”

Gideon stood with his phone and walked away from us, which I presumed meant he was calling his detective. They had Missy in custody and now three of Lyle’s men. They needed to track that bastard down. I watched Gideon from a distance and I could tell he was getting heated on the phone, nothing less than what the police force deserved. They couldn’t even be trusted to find a missing person, let alone a kidnapper.

“What do you think Gideon meant? That’s there’s stuff Brooklyn doesn’t want us to know?”I asked.
