I pause. “No. I want the right one.”

He relents and hands it over. “Before you open it, I want you to know that last year this was my fortune.” He holds the white paper up and I lean forward to read it.

Trust your heart.

“Wow. That’s really cool, and you did.”

“Yes, I did. I love you, Nicklin.”

I look back up to his eyes and I swear they’re a little glossy. “You okay, honey?”

He shakes his head. “I’m just a little scared.”

“Of what?” I set the cookie on the table. “What’s going on?”

“Just open your cookie and it’ll be okay.”

I cautiously gaze at him, but he seems better now. I tear open the plastic and take a bite of the cookie and the fortune tumbles to the table. I lift it and I see handwriting through the paper.

That’s weird.

I flip it over and my stomach drops.

Will you marry me, Nicklin?

I look up at him. “Really?”

“You should have chosen the left hand.” He opens his left hand and there’s a lovely solitaire diamond laying there. “Will you marry me, Nicklin Raines, and make me a ridiculously lucky man?”

“I love you, Dr. Riggs Walker, and yes, I’ll marry you and do everything I can to make you as ridiculously happy as you make me.”

He slips the ring on my finger and his lips press to mine, and then we hear clapping from outside the pulled curtains.

“Can we come in now?” I hear my bestie’s voice and I whip the curtain open.

“You knew?!” How it is even possible that Lindy knew and didn’t say a single word? She can’t keep a secret longer than the time it takes to sneeze!

“I helped pick out the ring!” Her arms wrap around my neck as she pulls me into a tight hug.

“It’s beautiful. Thank you.”

“Anything for you.”

More friends show up and we all snuggle into the U-shaped booth.

I lean into Riggs. “You know, I’ve never stopped dreaming of you.”

“It’s good to know that I truly am the man of your dreams.”

“Dr. Dreamy, I love you.”

“Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart.”
