I stop for a second and watch her as she slowly opens the wrapper like she’s savoring the fortune. “I think it might be,” is all I say.

Nicklin

I blush at his words and crack my fortune cookie to give myself something to do, so I don’t thoroughly embarrass myself in front of him.

It reads:Stop dreaming and start doing.

Laughter bubbles out of me so fast I can’t stop it and hold it up to Riggs to read.

After he finishes reading, his gaze meets mine, and he stares deeply into my soul, causing an ache in my chest.

“What are your dreams, Nicklin?”

His husky voice sends shivers down my spine. His hazel eyes swirl like a galaxy, hypnotizing me and making me believe he is otherworldly. The even crazier thing is that I know I’ve been trapped inside that galaxy before. I never want to escape.

“Um, to be healthy and happy.” I let out a slow exhale to calm myself.

His perfectly sculpted fingers wrap around the stem of his wineglass, and he lifts his wine with a soft smile. “Cheers to that.”

I lift mine to toast with him, then take a sip.

I nudge my chin to his fortune cookie. “And you?”

He lowers his glass and opens his fortune. His tongue rolls in his mouth. “I think I’m going to keep mine to myself.”

My mouth drops open. Seriously? “Hey, that’s not fair!”

Riggs shrugs with a smirk. “Life isn’t fair, I’m afraid.”

I slump back in the booth and wrap my arms in front of me. “I know that, but I thought you were playing fair.”

Slowly, he leans forward and reaches for my hand, making me untangle my arms. A tidal wave of shivers races up my arm at our contact.

“I promise there’s a reason. I just don’t want to tempt fate.”

With his galaxy eyes and shiver-inducing contact, I warm up and fully melt before him.

“But you’ll tell me soon?”

The sexy smirk appears again on his face. “On our second date?”

I hold in a snort, thankfully. “Smooth.”

He sits back, but our hands stay clasped.

“I wish. This is my first date in…” He rubs his other hand on his chin and then blows out air. “Six months?” He shakes his head like he can’t fathom the idea.

“One year to the date.”

Now it’s Riggs’ turn for his mouth to drop, even though he isn’t as blatant about it as I was. He quirks his brow and eyes me suspiciously.

“How is that possible?”

I reach for my wine and take another drink. Then give him my sweetest, most innocent smile. “If you get to keep your secrets, I get to keep mine.”

A big hearty laugh escapes him, making me feel warm inside. I want to make him do that again.
