“Yes, look at her,” snaps Grim, “with lip gloss on.”

“Well, I think you look very pretty,” says Hadley, picking her daughter up and nuzzling into her neck.

“You don’t think she’s a little young for makeup?” Grim asks, arching a brow.

“Hardly makeup, Grim,” says Hadley with a laugh. “Besides, Aunt Meli is good at makeovers, isn’t she, sweetie?”

Oakley nods, and I find myself smiling. “Glad you’re happy, madam,” I say, kissing her on the cheek. “Can I get back to what I was doing before you rudely demanded my attention?” I tease.

“Meli has a boyfriend,” Oakley announces, and Hadley grins as she eyes me suspiciously.

“Does she now?”

“No, she doesn’t,” I say. “And if she did, why would she tell her blabbermouth niece about it?”

“Does Mav know?” asks Grim.

“There is no boyfriend.”

“Who was the man on your phone?” asks Oakley innocently, and Hadley grins wider. Oakley caught me checking out pictures of Arthur on one of his business websites. I feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment, which only makes Hadley laugh harder.

“Oakley, I’ll tell Daddy your secret if you don’t stay quiet.”

Now, it’s Oakley’s turn to blush because there’s no way she’d want Grim finding out she has a boyfriend at nursery, even if he is only four years old. Grim takes his daughter from Hadley’s arms and sweeps her away, promising to tickle her until she confesses all.

“So,” says Hadley, falling into the seat Grim vacated, “who is he?”

“No one. I was looking at pictures on the web, and she must have thought it was a boyfriend. Kids.” I roll my eyes.

“You forget I know that look, Amelia,” she says. “There’s someone.”

Rosey skips over. “Does this jacket go with the outfit?” she asks.

“Yeah, you look lovely,” Hadley replies.

“You look nice. Off anywhere special?” I ask, hoping to change the subject.

“Maybe,” she says, grinning.

The door opens and Arthur Taylor walks in looking smouldering hot in shades and a suit, his expensive Rolex gleaming on his wrist. “Oh my god, are you going on a date with Arthur?” whispers Hadley excitedly.

Again, Rosey grins. “Maybe,” she repeats.

“A date?” I ask, feeling my heart sink to my stomach.

“And here I was thinking the man has no heart,” Hadley comments. “Since when were you into him?”

“You’re not blind, Hads. The man’s gorgeous, and if he’s asking me out for a date, I’m not gonna turn him down,” Rosey says with a wink.

She saunters off in his direction. “Don’t do anything we wouldn’t,” Hadley shouts after her.

I watch the way Arthur places a protective hand on Rosey’s lower back, guiding her out the door. “Oh wow, it’s him?” Hadley gasps.

I bring my attention back to her. “Huh?”

“Arthur . . . you like him.”

I don’t immediately answer because I’m still trying to work out why my heart feels so heavy. “Don’t be stupid. Rosey’s into him.”
