“Don’t even think about it,” she whispers.

I reach into the desk drawer and fumble around until I find a condom. The minute I get it on, I push into her, digging my fingers into her hips to hold her in place. “I don’t know what you’re doing to me, Angel,” I pant.

She pushes back against me, taking me deeper. I lift her leg, pushing it out to the side and resting it on the desk. She groans with pleasure, now lying flat against the desk. I feel her tighten, then her body trembles as an orgasm rips through her. I follow, gripping her shoulders and pushing deep into her, holding her there while I release into the condom. I fall over her, exhaustion hitting me, and rest my forehead against her back. “You okay?”

“Uh-huh,” she murmurs.

I stand, grabbing a tissue from a box on my desk and removing the condom. I dispose of it in the bin, and before she can stand, I get another tissue and wipe between her legs. “I need to sleep,” I tell her, tugging her against me and wrapping my arms around her waist. I bury my face into her neck, inhaling her scent. “Will you stay?”

She turns in my arms and wraps herself around me. “Nowhere I’d rather be.”

“Sorry I’ve been distant tonight. I don’t know how to function when things go wrong.”

She smiles, kissing me lightly on the lips. “I hate it when you’re not talking to me.”

I feel bad. “Angel, I was never not speaking to you.”

“Can we start tonight again?”

I smile, brushing my thumb over her swollen lips. “That’d be good.”

We shower together in silence, and when we step out, wrapped in towels, she takes my phone again, this time turning it off. “You need one night away,” she says, taking me by the hand. “Let me take care of you.”

We lie in bed together naked. She lays against my chest and sleepily strokes her fingers over my skin. “I’m sorry you’re having a bad day,” she whispers.

“I’m sorry I was a prick tonight. I should have cancelled. I’m not good to be around when I’m stressed.”

“You can talk to me,” she says.

I run my fingers through her hair. “What changed your mind about taking time to think about us?”

She shrugs. “Mainly jealousy,” she says with a laugh. “And because I spoke to Rosey. She was fine about us.”

“I knew she would be. She’s not into me like that.”

“How can you tell?”

“I know the difference between when a woman wants a fuck and when she wants more.”

Meli props her head on her hand to look at me. “How?”

“It’s in the eyes,” I say with a smile. “You look at me like there’s a future.”

“I’m tired of hurting,” she admits, a sad glint in her eye.

“I’m not gonna hurt you,” I tell her, tucking her hair behind her ear.

“You can’t promise that. No one can predict the future.”

“I guess not, but I can promise that I’ll do everything in my power to make you happy rather than sad. Starting with telling your brother.”

She groans and falls onto her back. “Great. He’ll ruin it.”

“I won’t let him, but it’s important I tell him out of respect. I’ve not done this, Meli, not for a long time, but there’s something about you that makes me want to tell the world you’re mine. I’ll handle Mav.” I roll onto my side, smirking. “Let’s play a game.”

“You don’t seem the type,” she teases, also moving onto her side to face me.

“We each ask a question.”
