“And nobody laughed at her because she got it wrong a couple of times. I don’t think boys will laugh at me, Ripper.”

“Of course, they won’t, because I taught you what to do. I showed you everything you know, and now, you wanna just leave me? It don’t work like that.” He moves closer, standing over me. “You don’t get to decide when I end this.”

My heart is beating out of my chest, and my palms are sweating. “Then I’ll tell someone,” I almost whisper.

He laughs, putting his ear closer to my mouth. “Say that again, Amelia.”

“I’ll tell my dad.”

He grabs my throat and lifts me to stand. “What will you tell him exactly?” he growls. “How you asked me to teach you how to fuck a guy?” He spits the words angrily. “Or how you’ve been happily taking my gifts, you ungrateful little bitch?”

“I didn’t want to,” I cry out, and he slams a hand over my mouth.

“You’re a cock tease, Meli, and everyone knows it. Your dad, your brothers, all the guys here think it. You walk around the place dressed like a hooker and expect men not to think you want all this? They’ll never believe you over me. I’ll tell them how fucking obsessed you are with me.” He squeezes my neck harder. “I’ve given you a fucking year,” he hisses, “and you’ll leave me when I say you can.” He shoves me onto the bed, grabbing a fistful of hair while he unfastens his belt. “And if you tell anyone, I’ll go to Hadley instead, and when I’ve taught her how to be a good little cocksucker like you, I’ll slit her fucking throat.”

I call Meli again. She’s still not taking my calls. “Coffee?” asks Jolene, grabbing the pot and topping up her cup. I shake my head and open my laptop. “Do you always work?” she asks, taking a seat at the kitchen table. She’s wearing a shirt that just about covers her arse.

“Have you decided what you’re doing about your brothers?” I ask.

“I’m going to report them missing, Albert said it’s best to, so it doesn’t look suspicious.”

“Do you need help with the businesses? I don’t know how involved you are in that side of things.”

“I’m fine. I know what I’m doing. Maybe I could borrow your little assistant sometime to help in the office,” she suggests, laughing.

“Meli is my girlfriend, one day to be my wife, so show some respect.”

She’s not put off. Instead, she pulls her knee up to her chest, not caring that her shirt’s ridden up to reveal her underwear. “Really? She doesn’t look like your type.”

“And what is my type?” I ask, feeling irritated.

“Someone strong,” she begins.

“Meli is the strongest woman I know.”

“Loyal.”

“You don’t even know her.”

“And able to handle you.”

I smirk. “She can handle me.” I slam the laptop closed. “I thought you’d be more upset over your brothers,” I say, collecting my things.

“I don’t think it’s hit me yet,” she mutters.

I leave, shaking my head. Something feels off, I just can’t put my finger on it.

I meet Albert at the office. He looks as exhausted as me. “You seen Meli?” I ask, unlocking the office door and noting she isn’t here yet.

“No, didn’t she stay at yours last night?”

I shake my head. “No. I don’t think she was too happy with my guest, thanks to you.”

He grins, taking a seat. “In other news, rumour has it that a woman was attacked last night. The streets are getting bad, Art. It looks like we’re losing control to everyone looking in.”

I growl and mutter, “And there will be a lot of people looking in.”
