“I have a dress. I’ve dreamed of this day for years, so I’m ready to go.”

“Don’t you think it’ll look suspicious?” I ask. “You’re getting married right after your brothers are killed.”

“The cops don’t care about Leon and Max, we both know that,” she replies, rolling her eyes.

“I don’t want the focus on me,” I snap. “Is this your plan going into action, Jolene, because I won’t go down for something I didn’t do.”

“Blah, blah, blah. This conversation is getting boring. Face the fact that we’re getting married and you’re not getting out of it.”

“I have to go,” Meli announces. “Have a great evening.”

I have to fight everything in me not to stop her leaving. I’ve killed men with my bare hands, but being alone with this crazy bitch feels like the scariest thing I’ve done. “You too,” I mutter.

“We’ll have a great night, won’t we?” adds Jolene, winking.

Meli forces a smile. “Let me know if there’s anything I can help with.” She pauses and frowns then gets flustered, realising what she’s said. “I meant the wedding. Anything I can help with on the wedding.” She grabs her things and rushes for the door. I can’t help but smile. She’s got a way with words that’s all Meli, and no one can make me smile like she does.

“She thinks I don’t know what she’s up to, what you’re all up to,” Jolene says, draining her glass of wine.

“What’s that?”

“You’re thinking of ways out of this.” She places her glass on the side. “But let me tell you, Arthur, there is none.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Imagine how powerful we’ll be,” she says, grinning. “We’ll run the streets together, take over any area we want until we run it all.”

“You remind me of someone,” I tell her, and she comes closer, running her hand over my chest. I remove it. “When I was rising up through the ranks, I worked for Big Tommy Shelton. He talked just like you, about taking over London. And I used to think he was on to something until I realised how big London was. No one can run London single-handed.”

“That’s why I have you. Unfortunately, the men in our world still see females as weak. I need you beside me to make them take notice.”

“And that’s where you’re going wrong. If you wanna take over more areas, they can’t see you coming.”

“Just like you didn’t,” she says, grinning. She grabs my cock through my trousers. “How does it feel to be owned by a woman?”

I smirk. “Meli will always own me, Jolene, no matter how hard you try.”

“Yet you’ll be marrying me, sleeping with me, fathering my children.”

I laugh. “You’re deluded. There’s no way I’m going near you again.”

She narrows her eyes. “Oh, but you are, Arthur. Because if you don’t, I’ll wipe that little bitch from your life completely.” She begins to unbutton my shirt. “And I’ll make you watch.”

I wake with a start, sitting up and looking around the room. Jolene stirs, and I get out of bed before she demands a repeat of last night. I go to the spare room to use the shower. I scrub myself like it’ll somehow wash away the feel of her on my skin. If this is my life now, I’m fucked.

Albert is downstairs making coffee. “What are you doing here?” I mutter, slipping on my jacket.

“Thought I’d check in on you. That’s allowed, right? Or are there more rules?”

“Don’t start, Bert. My head is fucked and I’m about to break. I had no choice, you know deep down I don’t.”

“I’ve got Rosey on it,” he says in a whisper. “She’s trying to find the hitman.”

“And how the hell will she take down someone who’s trained to do the same job as her?”

“I don’t know, Arthur, I’m just trying to get us out of this mess.”

I take his coffee from him. “Just say it,” I snap. “You know you want to.”
