“More determined,” I admit. “She’s not getting him. Even if they make it down the aisle, she’s not keeping him. We’ll find a way.”

“Is he . . . yah know, sleeping with her?”

I shrug even though I know he is. “Maybe. She’s dropping threats all over the place. She mentioned having a baby with him.”

Rosey gasps. “That’s the ultimate trap. If he has a kid, he can’t just walk away.”

“Don’t,” I whisper, feeling the ache in my heart. “I can’t think about it.”

“Didn’t you tell him you don’t want kids?” she asks, making me feel worse. I nod. “Does he?” I nod again and bury my face in my hands. “He wants them with you, Meli, not her. Let’s not get ahead. Maybe we can slip the morning-after pill into her coffee,” she adds, and we laugh.

“Or arsenic?” I suggest.

“Mav is working on helping him too. We’ll come up with a way.”

“I know,” I mutter. “I just feel like she’s got every angle covered.”

When I return to the office, Arthur is back. I sit at my desk without a word, and I feel his eyes fixed on me. “This won’t work, you working here,” he says.

“Look,” I say firmly, “no pressure, okay. Let’s take a step back and remove all pressure. Who do you love?”

“You.”

“How many kids do you want?”

“You don’t want kids,” he replies.

“If I did, how many?”

“As many as you’ll allow.”

“Favourite honeymoon destination?”

“Maldives.”

“Think of those answers. Every time you want to give up, think of those answers. You love me, we’ll get married and honeymoon in the Maldives, and we’ll make a start on the babies there.”

He smiles. “Babies?”

“Maybe two. A boy and a girl, if possible.”

“You want kids?”

“With you,” I whisper. “Only with you.” He nods, a look of calm passing over his face. “So, no pressure at all. Do what you have to do to get through this until we find a way out. Which we will.”

“Thank you,” he murmurs.

“I’ve made a start on the guestlist,” I announce, holding up a notepad.

“You don’t need to do that,” he says, looking uncomfortable.

“We’re in this together, right? If I hang around long enough, I might find some information that could help.”

After leaving the office, I make my way to Arthur’s house again. This time, Jolene is home. She’s in the kitchen cooking, and two men are with her. They all look at me as I enter. “Would you like me to start upstairs?” I ask, smiling politely at her guests.

“Who are you?” asks one, grinning.

“She’s the maid,” Jolene jumps in, looking annoyed.
