“Oh, great, why didn’t you say all this in front of Mav? I’d never have arranged it, especially without him knowing.”

Rosey grins. “Where would the fun be in that?” I roll my eyes. I am not prepared for this to go south.

“Won’t there be cameras?”

She shakes her head. “They don’t have cameras, I checked.”

We arranged to meet in a small bar on the E15 side of the tracks but very close to the border. It was owned by Jolene’s brother, Leon, but I guess it belongs to her now. When we arrive, it’s empty apart from the two brothers. Danny smiles when he sees me and comes over, kissing me on the cheek. I force a smile as he places his hand on my lower back and ushers me closer to his brother. “You remember Curtis,” he says, and I nod. “Curtis, this is Meli.”

“And my friend, Rosey,” I add.

Curtis shakes our hands and offers us a seat each at the bar. “What can I get you both?” he asks, going behind the bar.

“Just two bottles of beer, please,” says Rosey. “Quiet, isn’t it?”

He looks around like he didn’t realise and then shrugs. “Sometimes it’s like this.”

“Do you work here or . . .” Rosey asks.

“We own it.” He gives his brother a smile.

“Oh, I thought Jolene did,” I say, looking confused.

He narrows his eyes. “Did she say that?”

I nod innocently, hoping my plan to put their boss in a bad light works. “She’s always talking about the places she owns. You work for her, right?”

“No,” he snaps. “We don’t work for anyone.”

Danny throws an arm around my shoulder. “Let’s not talk about Jolene right now.”

“Meli said you were brothers?” asks Rosey.

“Yep,” says Danny. “Twins. Non-identical.”

“Wow, Meli’s a twin too,” she replies. “What a coincidence.”

They don’t seem interested. Instead, Danny takes a seat. “You’re both single?”

I nod. “What about you guys?”

“We’re too busy for relationships,” says Curtis bluntly.

Rosey grins. “Wow, what a thing to bring up on a first date.”

He shrugs. “There’s no point stringing you along.”

“I’m only here for her,” Rosey says, rolling her eyes. “But in case you didn’t know, you’re a terrible charmer.”

“We have a roof terrace, why don’t we go up there,” Danny suggests, breaking the stare-off between Curtis and Rosey.

I smile awkwardly. “If you’d like.”

He nods, so we follow him from the bar up some steps that lead out onto the roof. I glance nervously at Rosey. The last time she was on a roof space, she killed Jolene’s husband, which probably explains why she doesn’t look at all bothered now.

“What happened to you?” Curtis asks, pointing to my fading bruises as we sit.

“She got jumped,” says Rosey coldly. “Two cowards.”
