I shake my head. “No. Jolene thought we were, and I guess I left her to think that, hoping it would get her off my back.”

“Do you know of Danny and Curtis Palmer?”

I think for a moment. “I think Jolene mentioned once or twice that they work for her. Not sure what they did exactly. Pair of thugs, from what I’ve heard.”

“Oh, what exactly did you hear?”

I shrug. “Just rumours, Officer, nothing concrete. They’re a part of the E15 gang. Actually, I also heard that Jolene took over that too.”

“The E15 gang?” asks Stone.

I nod. “Apparently, though I don’t know for certain. As you know, I’m clean these days.” I give a smug smile. “But that’s the talk of the streets.”

“Would you say Jolene Hall liked you enough to try and hurt Amelia?” Stone asks.

“You said Meli was okay,” I snap.

“She is.”

I take a calming breath. “I guess so. She didn’t like Meli and made it clear by being off with her whenever she came to the office. She would use a different name, trying to give Meli the impression she wasn’t important enough to know. Just catty things, so I ignored it. Look, is Jolene in some kind of trouble? Is she the reason Meli called in sick today?”

“We suggest you speak with Amelia. If we needed you to, could you give us a statement with regards to your relationship with both women?”

I nod. “Sure.”

“Great, we’ll be in touch.”

When I get to the MC clubhouse, I immediately go to Ma and wrap my arms around her. She laughs and tells me, “All this fuss is ridiculous.”

“Are you okay?”

She nods. “They took very good care of me,” she reassures me. I look over to Albert, who nods to confirm he sorted the youths who were keeping her there.

“I’m glad you’re okay, Ma, and I’m so sorry.”

Mama B comes over. “Your Ma is staying with us for a while. She’s going to help me look after all my boys.”

Ma looks happy about this, and I relax a little. “Ma loves to look after everyone,” I tell her.

“You need to go and look after a certain someone,” Ma whispers, nodding to the office. “She looks very tired and worried.”

I smirk. “You’ve been digging up the gossip on me?”

“I wasn’t short of women here to tell all,” she says, winking.

I find Meli in Mav’s office. “Have we heard anything?” asks Mav.

I shake my head. “They must have her in custody because I’m certain she’d have called by now.” As I finish that sentence, my mobile rings displaying a withheld number, and I answer.

“Arthur, it’s Jolene,” she says.

“Why are you calling?” I snap.

“What do you mean? I need your help.” She’s confused by my tone, but if she’s with the police or they’re tapping her phone, I have to keep up the pretence that she’s harassing me. “I’ve told you before, time and time again, we’re not a thing and you have to stop calling me. Call one of your thugs.”

She scoffs. “It’s because of them I’m here.”

“Where?”
