Rosalie looked to either side of Dominick, searching for a way out of this conversation. She had to find Jay before anyone else did, and if Dominick was out here ... that was the last person that she wanted to see her son. If he found out that he was hers, Dominick surely would kill Jay.

"I ... I intended to go to the dinner," she stammered, too flustered and irritated with Dominick to contain herself. "See, I'm wearing your dress!"

His gaze swept over her appreciatively. "Yes, I suppose you are. Perhaps I can afford you a bit of leniency if you agree to spend more time in my personal company instead. That is, after all, far more valuable than wasting all that time with those dreary vampires at court, don't you think?"

A slight blush crept up Rosalie's cheeks. "I thought you enjoyed their company?"

"I did before being trapped here with them for four months. I'm not a man meant to be isolated, my dear. I like to experience everything, not the same again and again ..." He trailed off, his eyes twinkling as he looked at her. "But you ..."

"But ... me?"

"Well, you're just exquisite every time."

She looked away, her cheeks burning from how her body rippled in anticipation when Dominick stepped closer. It was as though her skin was magnetized to him, urgently trying to pull her closer to him, and it was taking all her effort to keep two feet planted on the ground and her arms firmly at her sides.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Dom."

She bit her lip when she realized the slip of the nickname, and she surprised herself enough that when Dominick took that as an invitation to come closer, she didn't stop him from placing a hand on her waist and tilting her chin up to face him.

"Your body must be lying then," Dominick murmured, his bright orange eyes flickering like fire as he gazed down at her. "Tell me you don't want the same thing as I do. Now that you're here, in my arms again, tell me honestly."

Rosalie wanted to feel revolted by his touch, but she couldn't. Even after all this time and the hate and hurt between them, she couldn't deny that she wanted him. During weak moments like this, she craved the heat of Dominick's arms around her, the sweet whisper of his words in her ear, and the warmth of his lips against hers.

She could feel her heart beating like a drum in her chest when Dominick leaned down ever so slightly, and pressed his lips to hers. The taste of cinnamon on his tongue was familiar and oh-so-sweet, and Rosalie couldn't help but let out a soft moan as she kissed him back with just as much intensity. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pushing the tips of her fingers into his dark hair as she pulled him closer. They stayed there for what seemed like an eternity—kissing passionately, their tongues dancing together like old friends reunited after far too long away from one another.

Too much had dragged them apart. Unnecessary fights about immortality. About the woes of right and wrong. Dominick had wanted her to stay with him for eternity, and the prospect of living forever terrified her. It still did.

And when they broke up, and she'd realized she was pregnant ... she knew she could never go to Dominick again because he would insist that she become a vampire and that Jay would also become one once he was older.

She'd never wanted to keep Jay from him, but—

Rosalie's thoughts stopped short.Jay. She was supposed to be looking for Jay, not making out with her ex in his garden!

With a gasp, they broke apart, Rosalie's breaths coming in ragged gasps. Dominick grinned at her and brushed a strand of hair out of her face before she finally had the opportunity to break free from his grasp. She turned away from him as though she was overwhelmed by what had just happened, and Dominick laughed.

"I think that punishment is more than fair," he said softly. "Don't you agree?"

"Yes," she whispered, her eyes frantically darting through the parts of the garden she could see in the dark for signs of her son. "Now if that's all, I have somewhere to be."

She made to walk away, but Dominick snatched her hand. "Now, wait a minute. You can't kiss me like that and walk away."

"I can, and I will."

"I am your king. You will not leave my presence unless I dismiss you."

Rosalie spun around in a rage. She could have been pleasant and played Dominick's games as she'd intended to tonight, but that was before Jay ran off. That was before Dominick kissed her like she was a missing piece of his soul.

But she knew it was all fake because, like her, Dominick didn't have a soul. They couldn't have one if they wanted to survive in this cruel, dark world.

"Fuck you, Dominick. You're always like this! King or not, you have no right to me or my presence, and you know it."

"If you won't admit that you want me, then lie to my face instead. Can you do it, Rosalie?" Dominick sneered. "Can you tell me that you felt nothing between us all those years ago? That you were like every other bimbo salivating for my cock in their mouth and pussy? That you were just using your beauty to get what you wanted from me—a guaranteed position and power in Daihalsa?"

"What if I was?"

He didn't answer, just clenched his teeth. Someone who didn't know Dominick very well would see the fiery rage in his eyes, the anger, and think he was simply goading her on. But when Rosalie looked into those eyes, she saw the hurt. The vulnerability. The shadow of the soft, gentle man she'd fallen for over a decade ago.

The man who'd torn her heart out and eaten it for his entertainment.
