She had curled her hair and put on some makeup like the picture of the woman in the costume. She walked to the door, opened it wide, and held out her arms. “What do you think?” she asked, giving him a twirl.

She also wore knee-high boots. It had been a long time since she wore any kind of heels.

Caleb gave a low whistle. “Doesn’t Annie look pretty?”

“I look stupid.”

“No, you don’t, baby.”

He was dressed as a zombie. A business zombie. His suit had claw marks running through it, with fake blood. His face had dirt marks on it.

“A witch and a zombie.”

“Yeah, you were once a good witch but went all dark when someone killed your beau, and now you’ve helped raise him from his grave so you can spend eternity together,” Caleb said, wrapping his free arm around her waist.

“You hear that, baby girl? I think he’s lost his mind since he’s given us characters.”

She let out a gasp as he ran his palm across her ass. “Only taking a leaf out of your book. You’re not the only one who can make up characters here.”

Annie laughed, sinking against him.

“Katherine and Ryan are waiting.” He pressed a kiss to her neck. “Come on.”

She carried Tara out of the apartment and down toward the underground parking where Caleb’s car waited. She strapped Tara into the car seat he’d installed a short time ago, and climbed in beside her. Annie still wasn’t comfortable riding in front. Maybe when Tara was a little older, but she wanted to be in the back in case anything happened, not that anything had ever happened.

Caleb put the radio on as they drove to his friend’s house, which wasn’t too bad as traffic was at a minimum. A lot of people were taking time off to enjoy Halloween. This was a first for her. Halloween usually meant more writing but instead of doing it without snacks, she enjoyed a lot of candy.

Within thirty minutes, they had given Tara to his friends and were nearing the nightclub. She’d gotten into the front seat with him, and he was cracking jokes, trying to make her laugh. She couldn’t help but check her phone every few minutes. This was new for her, leaving Tara alone without her. She was trying not to freak out. One day she was going to have to drop her off at nursery or kindergarten, and leave her with strangers for hours at a time. This was totally fine and it was good practice.

She hated it.

Caleb found a spot to park. They had already agreed that if he did drink, they’d get a taxi home. To his house or hers hadn’t quite been decided.

When they were out of the car, Caleb took her hand and they made their way toward the nightclub. Caleb had a friend who had given him tickets to the Halloween party. He showed them to the doorman, and they both were sent on through. The moment they walked into the club, it was all noise. Annie held his hand in a tight grip. It had been a long time since she went to any kind of party or nightclub. Caleb pulled her in front of him, and he wrapped his arm around her waist.

“You need to relax,” he said.

“I am relaxed. I’m perfectly calm.”

She was pleased he’d stopped holding her hand. Her palms were sweaty and she did feel a little queasy, but other than that, everything was fine. More than fine.

He chuckled. “Maybe I should spank your lying ass later.” He gripped her ass tightly.

“Caleb?”

“No one can see. Trust me. They’re all into partying right now.” They got to the bar and Caleb held his hands up for the bartender. He ordered her a cocktail and he took a soda. “You’ve got to drink as well,” Annie said.

“Nope. I can see you’re a little uncomfortable, and I’m going to stay sober so I can get you home.”

She wrapped an arm around his neck, pulling him close. “Where have you been all my life?”

He laughed.

“I’m not going to get drunk, but you know what I am going to do.” She ran her hands down to take his. “I am going to take you to have some fun.”

She pulled him onto the dance floor, and she didn’t care who looked at them or what people said. All she wanted to do was enjoy this time with him.

“Fuck me, Annie, I’m thinking I should have taken you home.” He spoke the words right next to her ear so she could hear them, and she couldn’t help but moan.

“That’s where we can go, but first, it’s time for some fun.”

He pulled her close and she loved the feeling of his hands all over her body. They danced for hours. She drank soda along with him, but asked the bartender for some shot glasses and that was how they enjoyed their drinks. Pretending to get drunk, partying, sweating, and by the end of the night, Caleb drove them to his apartment. It was the first time she’d been to his place.
