“It fits with what little I already knew,” I told him. I also wondered about the timing. Was it possible his interference with what happened eight and a half years ago had dissolved his alliance with the DEA, allowing him to become little more than a hired gun? Too speculative to determine.

“There are stories that he was also with the CEA in Ireland, the closest to an FBI they have in their country and even the KGB stationed in Russia at some point. After doing some additional checking, several people think he’s invincible. However, the most reliable sources confirm he’s an independent.” There was a lilt in Brogan’s voice.

“On which side of the law?”

“That’s just it. No one knows, but he’s reported to have killed over fifty people over the years, some under the guise of working as law enforcement. Another story is that he’s a hired gun now. If I had to guess, I’d say he works for the biggest purse. Now, you know how stories get started, suddenly having a life of their own, but I think one thing is clear. If the father of the woman you’re harboring is the Emissary, the man has no friends, only enemies.”

“Understood.”

The Emissary, an interesting name for the man. I wondered if her father had selected the title himself or had it evolved over time?

“There’s one more thing that I think you need to take seriously. It would seem everybody wants a piece of him. Every fucking law enforcement division, every syndicate who’s ever come in contact with him. There’s more than one lucrative contract for the person capable of hunting him down. You might consider the possibility that this bogus attempt at bringing you back up on those charges was all a game to bring the man out of hiding. Word on the dark web is that a lure is going to be used to bring him out in the open.”

Jade.

Had her call to him brought him out in the open? Not knowing exactly what she’d said to him, I couldn’t be certain. What I did know is that if Ryan was seen or if any one of his enemies got wind he’d come out of hiding, they’d do everything in their power to track him, including taking the one person who could force his hand. “Anything else?” I asked as I milled through the crowd, unable to catch sight of her.

“Nothing except your warning came at a good time. Liam called. He narrowly avoided an operation being discovered.”

“I’m glad I could be of assistance.”

“I’ll let you know if I hear anything else.”

“I appreciate what you’ve done.”

“That’s what brothers are for,” he said, half laughing.

I slipped my phone into my jacket and continued searching the floor. When I didn’t see them, I headed toward one of the other rooms.

Zane snagged my arm, his expression instantly forcing me to tense. “She’s gone.”

“What the fuck do you mean gone?”

“She needed to go to the restroom. I followed her. I don’t know how she did it, but she got away from me.”

Bristling, I glared into his eyes. “I’ll deal with you later. Get every soldier and find her.”

“Yes, sir.”

I moved through the casino, heading toward into one after another room. She was nowhere. As I rounded a corner, moving to the back entrance, I noticed a flash of red, the color of her dress. I took off running, pushing my way through the crowd, ignoring people who attempted to stop me. My gut told me she’d been taken,

When I lost her again, I knew there was only one way to get her out of here without causing a scene. Through the kitchen. I flew down the stairs, smashing my hands against several sets of swinging doors, finally catching another glimpse of red.

Then I heard her cry.

“No!”

Adrenaline shot through me, my heart thudding. I raced through the kitchen, knocking over trays and smashing into other people, ignoring their cries. As I yanked out my weapon, I could see an exterior door being opened.

I lunged forward, her cries increasing.

“Let go of me. No! Constantine!”

I couldn’t go fast enough but when I hit the door, I didn’t stop. She was being dragged toward an awaiting vehicle. I could hear the echo of my roar as I took aim, but she was being used as a shield. With the driver pressing down on the gas, I knew I was running out of time. “Jade!”

She swung her head around and for a few seconds, all time stopped. As the driver started to pick up speed, she threw a hard punch at whoever was pulling her into the vehicle. It was just enough, the man releasing his hold. As she tumbled onto the pavement, I lunged forward, dropping and shielding her as the man took aim.
