“Then it wouldn’t have been a surprise,” he said as he gave me a hard onceover.

“You are so bad. I will get you for this. What are his odds?”

“Fifteen to one,” Danika said, piping in. This was a family affair and for the first time in over two years, I felt like I had a family, the same kind of closeness I had with my mother. And I was happy, truly happy.

Finding out that I’d never see my father again had been bittersweet. At least I knew he was alive. He’d managed to answer several questions, including the fact that he and my mother had met in Mexico, spending two weeks together and had fallen in love. They’d even gotten married. She’d had no idea she was pregnant and hadn’t known she might never see him again. However, he’d given her a number just like he’d given me. When he’d heard about her pregnancy, he’d done what he could to provide assistance. At that point, he was still with the DEA, his salary low and his ability to visit my mother zero. Only later when he’d left his employ, venturing out on his own as an assassin was he able to find the time and risk the danger to visit.

At least I understood why he’d made certain decisions. And I knew for the most part my mother had accepted her life would never be a fairytale.

“I want to place a bet,” I told him.

“Nope. You can’t do it.”

“I have my own money, you know. A huge bank account. I can do whatever I want to do.” As the race started, the crowd cheered.

“You can’t do it,” he reiterated, his tone commanding.

“You’re stubborn. I’m going right now. I don’t care if you are in charge, I do get to make some decisions.” He allowed me to get a few feet away before jerking me back and into his arms.

“I told you that you can’t,” he growled.

“You’re mean.”

“Yes, I am. The reason you can’t, little brat, is that the race has started.” As he lowered his head, I clutched his shirt, rising onto my toes. Just the scent of him alone was enough to make me swoon.

I loved Constantine for better or for worse. Every time we weren’t together, I missed him. The moment he walked into the house, I was excited. And every time we made love, the passion exploded between us.

As he thrust his tongue inside, I swooned, my heart racing. The lovely dress he’d bought for me as a surprise couldn’t hide my body’s reaction, my hard nipples poking through the thin material. Every time he took me into his arms was a powerful moment, but today it seemed more so. He dominated my tongue, sweeping it back and forth across mine.

“You’re going to miss the race!” Danika said.

“Get a room,” Daniel told us.

I was breathless, the seconds ticking by, vaguely hearing what the announcer was saying. Then I heard the roar of the crowd.

“Oh, my God!” Constantine’s father yelled above the noise. “Con. Look. Your horse!”

I pushed away, lightheaded from the moment of intimacy, smiling as I pulled him around to face the track. I was shocked His Majesty had just passed two horses, now in the lead.

The look on Constantine’s face was one I’d never seen before. Full of pride and joy, the kind of happiness that only a simple act of a child or a beloved animal could bring. As soon as I started jumping up and down, Danika joined in.

“Yes. Go, His Majesty. Go!”

“Look!” I called. “Look. He’s going to do it. He’s going to do it!” As His Majesty crossed the finish line, I felt him pulling me against his chest once again. “Did you see? Did you?”

“Maybe I only have eyes for the most beautiful woman in the world,” Constantine teased.

I jammed my elbow into his stomach, tilting my head. “Then we need to get your eyes examined. The baby won!”

“Yes, he did.”

“That’s amazing, brother!” Danika called as she flanked his side, her eyes wide with excitement.

“Pretty good, Con,” Daniel said, his grin as wide as his brother’s.

As his father walked over, another flash of pride fell across Constantine’s face. “You did good, son. So proud of you.”

“I had nothing to do with it,” he said, half laughing.
