Tristen was right. There wasn’t a romantic bone in my body, but with her, everything seemed entirely different. Maybe it was the forbidden aspect or the fact she’d become my prisoner, a perfect specimen for me to take and use whenever I wanted.

Or maybe it was the same powerful draw I’d felt to her years before. I allowed the kiss to take precedence over everything else, losing myself in the moment. The taste of her was phenomenal, yanking my senses into overdrive. No woman had had such a crushing effect on me before. I dug my fingers into her soft skin, my heart racing. I’d thought of nothing but punishing her since finding out she was hours from being in my grasp. Now my thoughts were centered around marking her beautiful body, exploring every inch, and fucking her in every hole.

As I dominated her tongue, she began to struggle in my arms but the second I eased my hand between us, cupping her bare mound, she stiffened then stopped moving altogether. She was determined not to show her arousal. I broke the kiss, keeping our lips less than an inch apart, taking rasping breaths.

She closed her eyes on purpose, pretending she could ignore me.

I backed away, releasing my hold as soon as I heard Tristen clearing his throat. “Go get dressed. You’re allowed to select a few of your things in a single bag. Trust me, Jade. If you try to bring a weapon with you of any kind, you will be punished. My lieutenant Tristen will take you to a rendezvous location in a few minutes.”

“Lieutenant? I doubt you ever served in the military, and this isn’t a war.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, sweet Jade. This is very much a war. Didn’t you know? There are monsters and predators combing every city street, prepared to consume innocent lives.”

“I hope you’re including yourself in that category.”

Snickering, I took a deep breath, hoping her scent had stained my skin. “Absolutely.”

“Where are you going?”

“Contrary to what you want to believe about me, I take care of my own. As promised, I will eliminate your problems as part of our deal.”

“Eliminate. You’re going to kill Fast Eddie. Aren’t you?”

“From what you’ve told me, the man sounds like a pig. I assure you that no one will be pining away for him in his absence.”

“God. You can’t just go around killing people you don’t like.”

I shook my head. “You’ll learn soon enough that I can do anything I damn well please. I will see you soon.” As I turned, heading for the door, I heard her laugh and my balls tightened.

I couldn’t wait to enjoy my first real feast.

But first. Business.

* * *

Violence was a way of life in my organization, although not nearly as much as in my father’s regime. However, whether in the legitimate side of our businesses or in those that brought us the most profit, I couldn’t stand slime bags who hijacked people. Used car salespeople fit into that category. So did loan sharks. If a poor son of a bitch took out a loan, it took an act of God in order to be able to pay it back given the often hourly interest increases. That fucking pissed me off.

While Jade hadn’t told me the story about why money was owed, I’d already ventured a guess. Her mother had lost her soul, turning her sorrows into the hands of a false god. Sadly, the very drugs that had provided peace had ultimately taken her life. For Fast Eddie to come after Jade meant he was nothing but a fucking cockroach, deserving to be crushed under my boot.

And I was in the mood to take out my frustrations.

I’d known plenty of loan sharks in my day, but the lengths he’d gone to terrorize her were extreme by any standards. Miami was a brutal fucking city.

I laughed to myself as I eased out of my vehicle, staring at the glaring neon lights highlighting his pawn shop. The man couldn’t fit the mold of a shithead more if he tried. I took a deep breath, studying the street. While it wasn’t that late by Miami standards, the area of town was devoid of clubs and restaurants for good reason. This was as close to a slum as Miami had. Why her mother had chosen Eddie was beyond me, unless she’d had no choice.

I unbuttoned my jacket as I headed for the front door, pleased that he wasn’t swimming in customers. There was only one person trying to bicker with the rotund man behind the counter.

“No, man. I’m telling you it’s a Rolex,” the kid said, slurring his words.

“Sorry, kid. It’s a cheap piece of crap, but I’ll give you twenty bucks for the effort,” the man behind the counter said as he darted a look in my direction. I had no doubt he was the owner.

I glanced around the store, noticing a pristine Albert Pujols St. Louis Cardinals autographed Marucci bat. Damn. I’d had one of those when I was a kid, a gift from my father. It was too bad I’d broken it in half using it against a son of a bitch who tried to bully my younger brother. What the hell? It might come in handy. I moved toward it as the two men dickered, grabbing the bat from the case with ease.

“I’ll help you in a second,” Eddie called. “Just gotta wait your turn.”

“I can wait,” I said as I tapped the end against my palm, twirling it a couple of times. The piece was authentic. I thought about purchasing it, but why not just take a souvenir after I was finished? I walked closer, continuing to twist it in my hand.

From where I was standing, it was easy to see the watch in question.
