Why couldn’t I seem to get enough?

Her eyes were glassy from continued desire as well as exertion, but I could swear she was also trying her best to search my soul, attempting to determine what kind of man held her captive. Someone who’d hidden their goodness behind a mask of steel or a tortured man incapable of experiencing love?

“If you’re looking to see if I have a soul, I think you should know by now I lost that a long time ago.”

“I don’t know if you have a soul, but I can sense you do have a heart. Only you refuse to show it for more than a few seconds at a time. Why? Why do you have so much hatred inside?”

The answer wasn’t one she was looking for or could handle.

“If you believe that, my sweet girl, then you would be wrong.” I lightly pressed the tips of my fingers down the side of her face, curling my fingers only seconds later. I could crush her with the very anger that had threatened to consume me years before.

“What do you hunger for?” she asked. “Revenge or salvation?”

“There is no such thing as salvation for a man like me.”

“That’s because you don’t allow it.” She pushed away and I let her go, taking several deep breaths, filling my lungs with her scent.

“What do you want, sweet Jade?” When I turned around, I could sense she was fearful of telling me, yet I sensed the bold rebellion in her giving way to the strong urges that had exploded between us.

She craved the same darkness, the savage urges that set us apart from everyone else. Fate had put us together years before. I feared karma would steal her away from me again. I was to pay a penance for the man I’d become.

Her shoulders rose and fell several times until she shifted her head, allowing me to see her silhouette as well as the tears trickling down her cheek. Then her answer yanked at something else deep inside.

A sense of humanity.

“A beautiful life, but that’s no longer possible.”

Jade

Numb.

I’d felt numb for hours, my mind no longer able to process the various emotions and feelings the bastard had created. With every touch of the rough pads of his fingers, he’d scalded my skin. With every lick of his tongue, he’d taken me to new heights of pleasure that I hadn’t known existed. And with every command he’d issued for several hours, I’d allowed myself to be lost in a sick fantasy that would never end well.

I’d wanted to hate him with every ounce of my being, but it wasn’t possible. That made me loathe myself instead. The night of passion had been the most intense of my life, but now I was barely able to function like a normal human being. Maybe I was still lost in a fog of unhinged sex, the hard fucking fulfilling every wanton desire.

I’d enjoyed every moment of what had occurred between us. What did that make me? My muscles ached and when I slowly turned my head, the sight of his sleeping form was enough to take my breath away.

Perfect.

Muscular.

Inked.

Dangerous.

I wasn’t certain which word captured his prowess the best.

Whatever the phone call had been about had changed his entire mood, the dark stranger I’d met returning. He’d been insatiable in his needs, taking me as if he’d transformed into an animal. He’d exuded heat, his body resonating anger and frustration. While some might say he’d taken out his anxiety on me, I’d sensed what he’d done was completely the opposite.

I’d calmed him, soothing the beast he kept chained inside. However, I’d seen a glimpse, just like I had inside the courtroom. Then a part of his slick, perfect resolve had crumbled, revealing anguish underneath. He’d left me breathless with wonder, exciting me more than I wanted to admit to myself.

The truth was he confused the hell out of me. One day, the creature living inside would break free, taking his half of what Constantine believed belonged to him.

Then there would be nothing left of the other side except for his shell.

I wasn’t certain I could tolerate the creature, but he was the one craving passion.
