The hard crack as Tristen was tossed against the wall of the studio house where he was staying made me feel damn good. So good that I did it again.

And again.

“What the fuck?” Tristen bellowed, panting as he tried to stand.

I rushed closer, jerking him all the way up and issuing another hard punch into his gut. “That’s for betraying me.” I yanked my Glock into my fingers, pressing the barrel into his throat.

“Whoa. Hold on,” he wheezed, shaking as he lifted his arms. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Don’t do this,” Jade said from behind me.

“I told you to stay in the goddamn car,” I snapped as I twisted my head, keeping the barrel positioned in exactly the same place. I was seeing red, fury overriding any concept of common sense.

“You can’t tell me what to do,” she insisted, walking closer.

Tristen exhaled. “What is this all about? Why the hell are you bleeding?”

“Because I was stabbed by a son of a bitch who was hired to take Jade from me.” My fucking God. My voice had a strange tone to it, one I hated. “There are only a couple people who knew where I was. One of them was you.”

He seemed taken aback, still darting glances at the Glock. “There is no way I’d betray you, Constantine. I’m no fool.”

“Are you sure about that?”

Now his expression turned to one of anger. “Ever since that woman came into your life, you’ve been acting entirely differently. You need to get rid of her. She’s nothing but a fucking bitch who could destroy your life.”

As I snapped the gun against his head, Jade gasped, rushing beside me as Tristen slowly fell to the floor. “Jade is going to be my wife. You will never disrespect her again or I will finish what I started.”

“What did you just do? Are you crazy?” She dropped to her knees, instantly reaching for his pulse. “You could have killed him.”

“Yeah? Well, I didn’t.”

“You’re such a fucking monster.”

“Keep using the word, Jade, and maybe you’ll start to believe it.” I lowered my weapon, shoving it back into position. Then I moved toward the open front door, trying to think the situation through. If not Tristen, it was possible Drago had mentioned to the other soldiers why several buildings were being torched. No, he wasn’t that stupid.

“You’re both insane. Stop the violence. I need rags. I need antiseptic. You both need a damn hospital, which you won’t go to because you’re both stubborn and have some kind of a God complex. Guess what? You’re just mortal men who play soldiers as if that means anything in this damn life. Suffer. I think that’s all you enjoy anyway.”

Tristen grunted behind me, and I could tell he was attempting to stand.

“It’s okay, Jade. I deserved that. I apologize for what I said,” Tristen muttered, his words strangled.

“No, you didn’t. Trust me. I’ve been called a lot worse. I can’t do this. Kill each other. I don’t care, but I’m not going to watch.” She moved past me, trying her best to leave a wide berth between us.

I snapped my hand around her wrist, jerking her back. “You will stay inside that house until I get there. We are leaving the island, so grab your things.”

“Fine. Why not stay and track down the jerk who attacked me? Would that make you feel any better?” she retorted.

There was such fire in her eyes, the kind of passion for right and wrong that I’d never experienced before. Even my mother had never been so opinionated. I watched as she walked away, shaking my head. I was losing the kind of control I’d prided myself in having for years.

All because a woman had rattled me to my core.

As I walked back inside, slamming the door, Tristen did his best to look me square in the eyes.

“What is going on, Constantine?” he asked.

“You tell me. I called you.”

“You know what? I actually enjoyed myself last night. Granted, in between trying to do your bidding, but I was busy when you called.”
