“Well, as the supposed lady of the house, I get to make a few decisions. That’s one of them.”

He grinned like a kid, his entire face lighting up. “How about this? In private, I’ll call you Jade.”

“Deal. That will be our little secret.” I had a feeling I was going to like him. “To answer your question, I honestly don’t know.”

“Mr. Thorn is like anyone else. He eats and sleeps, relaxes when he can in front of the television. I heard he likes the Kansas City Royals a lot. He’s been to several of their games. He loves country music and riding horses.”

“You know a lot more about my… fiancé than I do.”

“He’s a good man.”

“Be careful, Zane. You’re walking on thin ice,” Tristen snapped as he walked into the room.

“Why don’t you just shut the fuck up?” My caustic mouth was going to get me into trouble but at this point I didn’t care. I was wired, exhausted, sick to my stomach, and terrified that my life would end in the blink of an eye. What did I have to lose at this point?

When Tristen’s upper lip curled and he headed in my direction, Zane stopped him, pressing his hand against Tristen’s chest.

“Let it go, Tristen. Perhaps you can remember that Ms. Rollins has had a tough few days, including almost being killed.”

Tristen turned his head slowly, his chest rising and falling.Atta boy, Zane.

“She will learn her place, Zane.” Tristen sidestepped him. “Now sit down and keep your mouth shut.”

My mother used to tell me that I had my father’s temper, Irish hot. I had no idea since I’d never seen my father angry. However, as soon as I slapped Tristen across the face, I accepted her statement.

Tristen’s reaction was swift and painful. He grabbed my arm, dragging me toward one of the chairs, tossing me into it.

“Whoa!” Zane snapped.

“Shut up, Zane. Make yourself useful and get a goddamn rope. She’s going to remain in the damn chair one way or the other.”

“I’m not tying her down to the chair.”

He swung his head around, snarling to the point I was certain he’d bared sharp teeth. “Either you do it or I will. Period.”

Zane shifted his gaze in my direction, backing away slowly. “Do not touch her, Tristen. Mr. Thorn won’t like it.”

“Get. The. Rope.” As soon as Zane walked out of the room, he smashed both hands on the armrests, peering down at me with venom in his eyes. “You’re going to become very obedient, Jade.”

“What’s wrong with you? I’ve done nothing to you. Not a fucking thing. I tried to defend you when Constantine was angry.”

“I can handle myself. Your interference is causing issues.”

“What do you want from me?”

“The truth. You might be able to use your doe eyes with Constantine, but it won’t work with me.”

“What have I lied about?”

“Your father. Who the fuck is he?”

I was almost at the point of being exasperated. “I don’t know. He was more of a sperm donor. Constantine knows that.” As if I was going to tell him a single thing.

“You’re lying.” When he lifted his arm, prepared to backhand me, I couldn’t seem to react fast enough.

“I suggest you stop right there, Tristen.” Zane’s voice was followed by the sound of a magazine being slapped into a handgun.

While Tristen bristled, he kept his arm raised high.
