Maybe that was the moment I realized just how much I wanted a family of my own.

But only with Jade by my side.

CHAPTER13

Jade

“Mr. Thorn is on his way back,” Zane said after walking back into the room. As he’d done before, he offered a smile of reassurance.

“Okay. At least you can go home for the night.”

“Tonight I need to. The nurse caring for Amy has the night off.”

“Your sister is lucky to have you.”

“That’s sweet of you, Jade. She would like you.”

“I’d love to meet her one day.” What he’d told me about his father continued to swirl in my mind. How could anyone be that way?

He took his glass toward the bar, pouring it in the sink. “I try and keep my business life separate from my personal one, even if I don’t know how much she’d understand about what I do. I hope that doesn’t insult you.” As he moved toward the door, I sensed a strong feeling of love for the girl.

“Of course it doesn’t. But I’m pretty good with kids. At least I think so.”

“She’s thirteen.”

I realized just how much of a handful he had. “If I can help in any way, I’m happy to.”

“What are we talking about?” Constantine said as he walked into the room. His eyes immediately fell to the rope on the table.

“His sister. I’m eager to meet her,” I answered, realizing almost instantly he was furious, ready to go into a rage. I moved out of the chair toward the two men.

“What the fuck is this?” Constantine demanded as he yanked the rope from the table, taking two strides then tossing Zane against the wall.

Zane threw up his hands, a look of shock on his face. “Mr. Thorn. I…”

“Answer the damn question.”

“Constantine, just stop,” I snapped, moving closer.

“Stay out of this, Jade. Did you do this?” he demanded.

I cocked my head, glaring at Zane. I was no expert in the protocol of the mafia, but I knew Zane needed to stand up for himself and tell the truth.

“Yes, sir,” Zane answered.

Shocked, I was at a momentary loss for words. Just long enough for Constantine to take two steps away, slamming the back of his hand against Zane. I was horrified he was so furious that the force he used knocked Zane to the floor.

That’s when I lost it.

“You son of a bitch. He did nothing wrong. He’s too fucking loyal to you and this goddamn organization to tattle on that horrible man you have working for you.” I confronted Constantine without reservation, ready to knock the hell out of him if necessary.

Zane struggled to get to his feet, blood trickling from his mouth. “It’s okay, Ms. Rollins. You were my responsibility. I should have handled the situation better.”

“Oh, my God. Don’t do that, Zane. Tell him what happened. Constantine can be a reasonable man. Can’t you?” I slapped my hands on my hips, daring the asshole to say a freaking word other than to apologize.

Constantine narrowed his eyes, rearing back and sucking in his breath. “Is what Jade said true? Did Tristen demand to have her tied up?”

“Yes,” I answered for him. “Zane wouldn’t allow him to touch me.” I didn’t give a crap if I’d crossed some line.
