“Well, my mother said I had my father’s temper.” Shit. Shit. Why had I said that? Cringing, I closed my eyes briefly. He didn’t shake me or try to drag information out of me. He just continued chuckling.

“You will need to learn to keep that in check.”

Nodding, I took a deep breath, reminding myself that I had no choice in the matter.

“Are you hungry?”

The question seemed to come from out of the blue. “I could eat. Maybe I can cook something.”

He took my hand, tugging me closer. “No. I’m taking you out.”

“You know I don’t have any clothes, not really.”

“You don’t need to worry.” He brought my hand to his lips, his eyes never leaving me as he dragged his tongue up one finger then down the next. Instantly, my nipples were hard pebbles, poking against my shirt.

“You can’t do that,” I managed.

“Haven’t you already learned that I can do anything I want? My house. My rules.”

“You seem to say that about everything in every location.” Why was I swooning, my pussy aching?

“Yes, you’re right. An old habit.”

“That I doubt you’ll try to break.”

“You can see right through me.” He continued teasing me then wrapped his other arm around my waist, pulling me onto my toes.

I pressed my hand against his chest, immediately clawing his shirt. “Never forget that.”

“Mmm…”

As he lowered his head, capturing my mouth, a series of bright stars floated in front of my eyes. I was no longer surprised that my body had a mind of its own. Around him I felt special, wanted, even needed. There was no explanation for it or understanding of what it would ultimately mean, but I couldn’t erase the longing any more than I could stop breathing.

He was my drug, intoxicating on some fronts, but stabilizing on others. The dichotomy was fascinating and scary, delicious and exciting.

As the kiss took on a life of its own, he allowed our tongues to dance together. The taste of him was an explosion of sensations inside my mouth, my pulse increasing as my heart skipped several beats. Now the rough and tough man was tender, but I sensed it wouldn’t last for long. He was far too hungry and in truth, I was famished.

When he broke the sweet moment, he hovered over me, allowing his hot breath to cascade across my jaw, nipping my lower lip gently. I clung to him, rolling onto my tiptoes, wanting him to crawl inside and never leave.

That’s what scared me the most, never being set free from the burning desire threatening to consume both of us.

Growling, he pulled away, giving me a sly look. “You’re coming with me.”

“Where are we going?”

“Let’s just say the finest establishment in all of Kansas City.”

“That was the best burger I’ve ever eaten,” I said as I finally pushed my plate away.

“It was, huh?” Constantine said in his usual husky voice. He’d barely taken his eyes off me during dinner. It was easy to read his eyes, the lust-filled look providing a pretty good indication of what he had planned for dessert.

I grabbed a fry, dipping it in ketchup then easing it across the table, pretending my hand was an airplane before smashing the end against his lips and jaw. When I laughed, I think I surprised both of us.

He lifted his head, swiping his index finger through the red goop then grabbing my wrist and wiping it down my cheek. How could I not laugh? There was something special about the larger-than-life man laughing, and enjoying time doing nothing more than eating a burger and fries inside a very cool restaurant. The walls were brick, almost every inch covered with memorabilia of some famous celebrity or athlete taken from inside. The people inside knew him, acknowledging him with a warm welcome.

The place wouldn’t have been complete without a country musician singing his heart out as he strummed on his acoustic guitar.
