“Sorry, Mr. Thorn.”

Growling, I realized it was Zane. “What is it?” I asked as I swung my legs off the side of the bed.

Jade jerked up, yanking the covers tightly against her chest. “What’s happening?”

“Zane was about to tell us.” I rose to my feet, grabbing my weapon from the nightstand and shoving it back into position.

“I tried calling you. You’re about to have a visitor,” he said. “There are a couple of police officers and an attorney here coming up the driveway.”

“Hand me your phone. Mine’s in my office.”

He did, taking an immediate step back and looking away.

An attorney. A prosecuting attorney. I had no doubt Martin Banks had paid me a visit, which I found fascinating since I hadn’t been charged with a damn thing. “Let them in, Zane, and keep them in the living room. I’ll be right down.”

“Yes, sir, Mr. Thorn. I’m sorry to interrupt,” he said, giving Jade a respectful nod before walking out.

“Why are they here?” she asked, tossing back the covers and jumping off the bed.

“To hassle me. It’s a game they like to play. They’ll use Daniel’s attack as a preface, but there’s one reason the prosecutor is here.”

“Prosecutor? They’re retrying the case.”

“I will guess my ploy worked. They know you’re in town. Stay right here in this room.”

“That’s not fair. I’m a part of this.”

“I know you can’t trust me, Jade, but this once, you need to try and do so. Stay right here. I want to find out what they think they have, and you don’t need to be involved. Will you do that for me?”

“You’re playing a game.”

“No, I’m trying to make certain you’re not used as a pawn.” Before she had a chance to say anything else, I placed my finger across her lips. “Do not disobey me. You know what happens when you do.”

She narrowed her eyes and puffed out her lip. Goddamn, I adored this woman.

“Okay, I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

“Wait,” she said then wrapped her arms around me, almost immediately sensing her action had caught me off guard. When she pulled away, her lips were pursed. “I just wanted to say good luck.”

I slipped my hand around the back of her neck, pulling her onto her toes. “Very few people surprise me, at least not in a good way.”

“Does that mean I do?” she asked as she clung to my shirt.

“Lady. That means you shock the hell out of me in the very best way.” I captured her mouth, holding her against me, feeling the combined beating of our two hearts. Having her in my arms at this moment wasn’t just cathartic; it was karma’s twisted way of bringing the past to the present. When I backed away, she seemed the most vulnerable of anytime I’d seen her.

But a little tiger remained just below the surface. God help anyone who got in her way.

I closed the door behind me, immediately dialing Barrett, Zane waiting several feet away.

“You heard about Daniel,” he said as soon as he answered the phone.

“Yeah, but that’s not why I’m calling. You need to get over here. The police and a special prosecutor are in my living room.”

“Goddamn it. What the hell did you do this time? I’m going to give you the same piece of advice I did nine years ago. Do not say a word. Not one until I get there.”

“I’ll do my best, Barrett, but you know how I am.”

“That’s the problem. I do.”
