“What do you have to say, young man?” the judge asked, leaning over his bench.

Justin’s face wrinkled as I’d seen so many times before and he said clearly and without reservation, “Can I please go home with Daddy and Mommy so I can see my puppy?”

I pressed my hand over my mouth, unable to stop crying.

“We’re going to see what we can do to make that happen, Justin,” the judge said.

When I looked over at Phoenix, I witnessed something I never thought I’d see.

Tears were running down his face.

EPILOGUE

Wren

One month later

A beautiful spring day followed a night of rain.

My wedding day.

The windows were open in the room, the light breeze bringing in the scent of flowers. I’d never felt happier.

“You look beautiful,” Cammie said breathlessly. “Perfect.”

“I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Where do you think I’d be?” She laughed. I knew it been hard for her the last few weeks, but I’d also seen her flourish, getting a house of her own, lovingly decorating every room.

“How’s that new hot man of yours?”

“Dreamy, but we’re not here to talk about me.” She giggled, her eyes lighting up. “I’m glad you’ll finally get to meet him today.”

“I’m glad you brought him.”

We both heard a knock on the door and she winked. “I’ll get it.”

When Phoenix tried to walk in, she did her best to block him.

“You can’t see her before the wedding!” Cammie hissed.

“Rules were meant to be broken,” I told her. “Can I have a few minutes, dear sister of mine?” In his hand was a huge envelope. I felt like bad news was going to crash the wedding.

“Okay. Five minutes. Not a minute more,” she told him as she walked out the door.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “She’s tough.”

“Just like her sister.” He walked closer, shaking his head. “You are gorgeous. Let’s skip the wedding and go straight to the honeymoon part.”

“Not a chance, buster. So, what do you have there?”

“Hmm… This? Oh, it just might be your wedding present. Do you want to see?” He held it over my head, his eyes twinkling.

“Of course I do, although it doesn’t look like gold.”

“It’s much better.” He grinned as he handed it to me.

I took a deep breath, easing open the flap then pulling out what looked like concept photographs. As I flipped from one to the other, I realized that I was looking at detailed computer-generated pictures of the sanctuary I’d described months before. “What is this?”
