“I’m here safe and sound,” I said, suddenly craving a glass of wine.

“You didn’t call me. I was worried sick, and my calls didn’t go through,” Cammie admonished. I was thrilled she was so happy after everything she’d endured in her life. Still, I wanted to beg her not to get married, but that would be the bitchiest thing I’d done my entire life.

And she didn’t deserve it.

“Well, I stopped for the night.”

“Why didn’t you call me then?” She leaned forward toward the phone, narrowing her eyes.

“I might have been stranded. And busy.”

“What do you mean stranded? I told you that you shouldn’t have brought the car. Are you okay? Are you hurt?”

“No, I’m not hurt. Hold on.” I propped the phone against the toaster, taking a few seconds to select a wine. While at this point I would have sucked it right out of the bottle, I was thankful there were some very pretty wineglasses, too pretty to be left in a rental house if you asked me.

“Is that why you look rode hard and put away wet?” she teased.

No, that’s because I was rode hard, kept wet and hot for blissful hours.“Very funny.” I found a wine opener and knew it was my lucky day. As I started to open the bottle, she remained quiet. I finally threw her a look and sighed. “I drove into a ditch, but a guy came along and saved me.”

“A guy?”

I waited until I’d popped the cork, pouring a hefty amount in the glass and taking a sip before leaning over the counter, unable to keep a smile off my face. “Let’s just say they grow their men in Montana big, strong, strappin’ and packin’.”

She narrowed her eyes then slapped her hand across her mouth, giggling like some schoolgirl. “You’re kidding me?”

“Not even a tiny bit. Of course, that was after I threatened to cut his balls off with an ax I found.”

“Whoa. Hold on. You had an ax?”

“No, he did. I found it in his bag inside the motel room where he took me when I was unconscious.”

“Wait a damn minute. Repeat what you just said,” Cammie said, her expression full of horror.

I laughed. “It was a misunderstanding. I thought he was an ax murderer. Turns out he uses the ax for smokejumping. We threatened each other then we had sex multiple times.” I couldn’t believe I’d blurted it out just like that.

Her look of revulsion turned into one of shock.

“Wow. You took a plunge alright. I know what I said to you, but oh, my God.”

“It was crazy, just one of those things.”

“Just one of those things. Girl, you are an entirely different person. So, was he really hot?” Cammie asked, waving her hand in front of her face as she formed a perfect O with her mouth.

“You have no idea.”

As I shifted from foot to foot, I was reminded again that he’d spanked me. I didn’t think I could admit to that humiliating part. She knew me as a tough woman, taking on both wealthy male clients and arrogant financial advisors with glee in my eyes.

“Wow. I wish I could take after you,” Cammie admitted. Why did I have a feeling she was second guessing getting married? How many times had I wanted to convince her that she shouldn’t be marrying a stuck-up, rich prude who couldn’t stand me? I’d learned the art of biting my tongue.

However… an evil thought rushed into my mind.

“Why don’t you come out and play tonight?” I asked, although my tone was more of a purr.

“With you? You’ll lead me astray. At least according to Mom.”

“Well, you deserve a bachelorette party.”

Cammie huffed. “Are you kidding me? Marcus would have a cow. We’re going to dinner at his parents’ house.”
