Just after I closed the distance, Bart threw a punch, catching me in the jaw. I punched him twice and the crowd went wild.

But he wasn’t done yet, coming out swinging.

And what did the little woman do? Decided she was going to retaliate.

And she did it, her hard right hook catching Bart against the cheek.

Fuck.

As all hell started to break loose, both Gage and Marshall stepped in the middle.

“This is gonna stop right here, boys,” Gage snapped, glaring at me as he shook his head.

“I’m going to kick his ass for touching mine,” Wren snarled, trying to get to Bart a second time.

I snagged her long hair, yanking her backward just as she decided to throw yet another punch. When it hit me square in the eye, she opened her eyes wide, finally realized who’d come to her rescue.

A second time.

“Phoenix,” Wren gasped.

I took several deep breaths, the same vile thought I’d had before with her dancing in my mind. The girl shouldn’t have messed with a man like me.

“Now you did it, sweetheart. I told you to be careful what you ask for.”

Wren

No. No. No!

What had I just done?

The carnal look on Phoenix’s face stated it in bold red letters.

I’d fucked with the wrong man. It didn’t matter that it was accidental.

Fate had to be playing games with me. There wasn’t a chance that the rugged, dominating savior was standing right in front of me and I’d managed to drive my fist into his eye.

Oh, yes, it was. Now this wasn’t a game. Karma hated me.

And what was he doing acting so authoritative?

“Phoenix,” I repeated, trying to figure out why my life continued to spiral into the toilet. Although seeing him again had brought up another wave of heat, the embarrassment from the other night as well as from the fact I’d cold cocked him weighed on my mind.

And I had a date with him the next night. No, it wasn’t a date exactly, but it was obvious he thought of me as his possession.

“Yeah, darlin. It’s me. How many times have I told you not to tease other men?” Phoenix wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me close.

The two men who’d broken up the fight were all grins.

Wait a minute. He was already assuming the role of my boyfriend. Oh, what the heck. Why not? I could tell the three ugly men were out for blood. If I’d known that the highest bidder would win a date with the bull rider, I wouldn’t have been coerced into riding the damn mechanical thing in the first place. Okay, maybe I didn’t need to have my arm twisted, but I hadn’t been told the rules.

Phoenix nuzzled into my neck, half laughing. “You’re one very bad girl,” he whispered, which caused me to tingle all over.

“Get used to it,” I whispered back.

“Not on my watch.”
