CHAPTER6

Wren

This just couldn’t be happening to me.

What were the odds I’d run into the gorgeous man in such a big town? Was fate trying to tell me something?

“Let go of me,” I snapped, pounding him on the back.

“Not gonna do it,” Phoenix snarled, taking long strides down the corridor then kicking in the door to the men’s room. Then he growled at the only man inside.

“Get out,” he snarled.

I jerked up my head, wiggling with everything I had to get out of his hold. “Are you crazy?”

“That’s what I’ve been told on several occasions.” He eased me onto my feet, shaking his head. “But it’s a good thing I came along when I did. Bart is a hell of lot crazier than I am. He’s also a brutal asshole, a dangerous criminal.”

“I told you I could handle him.” I tried to push my way out from around him, but he fisted my hair again, narrowing his hooded eyes. “Besides, you’re a dangerous man too.”

“Sugar, from what I’ve seen, you’re not capable of making the best decisions. I’m going to help change that.”

“Excuse me, Mr. Big Shot. You’re not my keeper.”

When he wagged his finger in front of my face, his eyes twinkling, I almost did something irrational like slap him across the face.

Good. Just do that and see what he does.

“That’s where you’re wrong. I am through the weekend. And that starts now.” As he started to unfasten my jeans, I was immediately frozen for a few seconds.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I slapped at his hands, almost laughing at myself. As if that was going to do any good.

“Giving you a hard spanking.” He managed to yank down my zipper and I slammed my fists against him.

“Oh, no, you don’t. I’m not a little girl, and you certainly aren’t going to humiliate me.” I wiggled with everything I had, ready to scream bloody murder.

Only I knew it wouldn’t matter. Between the drunken, rowdy assholes and the band playing at full volume, there was no way anyone would hear me or care.

Maybe they’d sell tickets to watch me being spanked like a bad little girl.

“You certainly act like one. What the hell were you thinking?” He grumbled under his breath, snapping his head toward the door when some drunken fool tried to come inside. “Get out and stay out.”

“Sure thing, buddy,” the dude said, smiling as if he knew what was going to happen.

“I wanted to have some fun. To live dangerously, just…” I started to say just like him, but that was insane.

He managed to finish unfastening my jeans and I pummeled my fists against his chest again. The man was built like a carved stone statue. There was no way I could budge him.

“This isn’t the kind of place for you,” Phoenix growled, the sound just as primal as it had been before.

“But it is for you?” I almost got away from him only to have the brutal man grab my arm, swinging me around and tossing me over the edge of the counter so I could stare myself in the eyes as I was being punished.

This was crazy.

“Touch me and I’ll cut off your fingers. Okay?” I snarled.

“God, I love your fire.”

I threw him a hateful look. “I’ll show you fire.” The lighting might be shit in the ugly space, but his eyes were luminescent, drawing me in. For a few seconds, I was strangled by the intense connection we seemed to have, as if I was being sucked into a black hole. I purposely blinked, fighting again but I could tell it was no use.
