“Well, we’re the ones likely to face death a little sooner.”

Another edge of the stone island crumbled away. The little pieces of stone fell away toward the far-distant earth.

We had to figure out how to get down. I was shackled, and the dragonsbane in my shackles meant I couldn’t shift even if it weren’t for the bricks. I tried to break apart the bricks, until Alina caught my bleeding hands and begged me to stop.

“Kallus is manipulating Honor,” I said. “I have to get to her.”

“We’ll figure this out together, big brother.” She rested her healing touch lightly on my hands, murmuring the words of her spell, and flesh knit back over bone, skin healing pink over the red. Then she squeezed my hand. “Baby soft now. No more callouses.”

At first it seemed like there was no way down.

Then I thought of how Honor and Zehr had shared power. Honor had teased us dragon royals that we weren’t capable of sharing our power… not because of magic, but because of personality. And I’d heard stories since of shifters sharing their powers too. The wolf shifter who had gripped his wife, then winged away from us as a bird, must have stolen her powers.

“I can’t use any of my dragon powers,” I said. “But maybe I can give them to you. And maybe…”

I’d had a crazy idea that maybe our animal powers weren’t as fixed as we’d once thought. Almost everything about the magic was a lie after all.

“Maybe?” Lucien was on his feet in an instant. “And then what, Lynx?”

“I know it sounds crazy, but I think if I give her all my magic, I might be able to give her the ability to shift into my dragon too. Obviously, we’ll need a backup plan, so you’ll have to use a cushioning spell for her descent since my magic doesn’t work with the dragonsbane.” I turned to Alina, expecting to see fear, expecting to apologize to her for even bringing up such a risky proposition.

But her eyes were alight.

I almost faltered at the sight of how excited she was. “As long as Lucien can hold the cushioning spell, we’ll get you on the ground, whether it works or not. And then you can go to the others for help.”

Lucien scoffed. “IfJoachimalmost died falling off this platform, how likely is it that Alina can make that jump?”

“Down, boy,” Alina said. “I love how protective you are, until I don’t. We’re all dead if we stay up here.”

Lucien’s jaw worked.

“You can do the spell to control my descent if it doesn’t work,” she assured him. “I feel totally safe with you, Lucien.”

After a moment, he nodded.

“Kallus would be so pissed if he knew Joachim let his prizes fall to their death,” Lucien muttered. “I’m still hoping the two of them manage to kill each other.”

Lucien swept his hand through his mop of auburn hair and paced as I tried to transfer my magic to Alina. The world swam, and she grabbed my wrist, breaking the connection of magic between us.

“Knock it off,” she warned me. “You can’t give me more than you can actually spare.”

“At least if you and Lucien make it off this rock, you can tell Honor.”

“Tell her yourself, you stupid mug,” she said affectionately.

“Don’t do it,” Lucien said frantically as Alina walked toward the edge. My own heart lurched, unwilling to see her jump.

My sister leapt from the ledge.

CHAPTER38

Honor

Caldren flew into the room, and his boots crunched over the broken glass from the lamp. “We’ve got company. Joachim’s dragon knights just landed.”

“Are all the fucking knights on their side?” Damyn swore.

“We’ll hold them off,” Caldren’s gaze fell to Joachim on the table. “You keep doing what you must.”
