“And we can reverse that,” I said, thinking of our friends who had been turned by the Scourge. “But only if we help Honor.”

“You have to let me come,” Hanna said fiercely.

“It’s not a good idea,” Lynx said, kindly.

And because I can’t help but be an ass to my brother, I said, “It isn’t. But we’re doing it anyway. This is Honor’s sister.”

Hanna lit up, and I quickly added, “There are rules. You have to listen to what we say and obey immediately. You have to stay behind, safe, when we ask. We can’t let you get killed. Honor would hate me forever.”

But Hanna hugged me again, and I hugged her back. I had a soft spot for Honor’s feisty little sister.

Lynx shook his head. “You are such a pushover.”

“Fuck you.” I rested my hand lightly on Hanna’s shoulder. “Let’s fly. We’ve got to find Caldren and Jaik.”

CHAPTER5

Caldren

It wasstrange to have my brother with me in the rebel camp. Nora warned me there were unhappy mutterings, but no one dared say anything to my face. And I was fairly confident no one would dare knife Jaik in the back, either no matter how much they hated their dragon shifter rulers.

“What do you think Honor is doing right now?” Jaik asked me.

I stared him across the glowing embers of our fire. The breeze blew up and sent sparks drifting between us.

My first inclination was always to assume that my brother was being a dick. But then I realized, he was probably obsessing over where she was and if she was safe. She wasn’t. I knew that, and I knew Honor could take care of herself, but I was supposed to be with her to protect her. “She’s probably making the Lord of the Scourge miserable. As well as she should.”

“I don’t like being away from her.”

“Me either.”

In the flickering light of the fire, his face was cast with harsh shadows. He didn’t even look at me. I wondered if he was thinking about how, if he had his way, he’d have Honor to himself and they’d be as far away as possible, possibly in the Poison Kingdom with Lucien and Alina.

We’d made headway, but I didn’t think my brother would ever be happy to share Honor.

“What are we going to do if she falls in love with him?”

“How could she? He’s a monster.”

Jaik’s lips twisted wryly. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’re all pretty terrible. And yet the feelings I get through the bond I have with her make me think she doesn’t entirely hate Zehr.”

That had to be an understatement, given his face, and I felt a sudden rush of jealousy that Jaik could know her better than I did. I had the mate bond with her, but they were both dragons and he had marked her as well. Just the thought of Honor falling in love with Zehr sent an ache through my chest.

“If she falls in love with him, then I just don’t see how this…ends.” It was a way to talk around another issue that nagged me: how Jaik and I were going to reconcile ourselves to sharing her.

Because Honor had already made it clear she didn’t intend to choose either one of us. And that was fine—in the stolen moments we had, in the midst of the constant chaos. But what about afterward? When we finally wrestled peace into existence for the kingdom… would we have our own peace?

Jaik shrugged. “What Honor wants, I’m pretty sure Honor is going to get. Both because she is indomitable, and because we all want to make her happy.”

“He’s our enemy.”

Jaik finally raised his gaze to mine. “You and I were enemies.”

There it was. “And we aren’t anymore?”

“No. Not when she needs both of us.”

“Even if it makes you miserable?”
