The faintest spark of magic.

Then Kallus yanked Talisyn back into the shadows.

CHAPTER65

Honor

I leaptforward into the shadows, trying to travel, trying to draw on my magic. For long seconds, nothing happened. Then as if that spark of magic had blown up into a flame, the darkness curled over me andthroughme, and I faded into the shadows.

Kallus shone in front of me for just a moment, Tal with him; I glimpsed them from behind. My magic was fading, and I could barely breathe in the press of the darkness.

But the next thing I knew, I was stumbling on the slick floors of a temple.

It was the temple that we had left in ruins.

But something was wrong. It was gleaming, bright, restored. The columns stood once again. The roof blotted out the moonlight overhead. Vines crept up the columns, flowers blooming from them.

Chaos.

Kallus stood by that cursed alter. He and Talisyn were half-hidden in the shadows, yet his face even cast in shadow was triumphant. “My girl! You are drawing on the magic!”

“Let’s see,” I said, raising a hand to palm a fireball. It had my uncle’s name on it.

But the merest flicker of flame licked across my palm, then died.

Kallus looked even more disappointed than I felt. “Draw on the magic, Honor.”

A fierce wind blew through the room, carrying sparkling blue mist, and Kallus’s eyes widened in fear. My own heart was racing.

“Now!” He raised the blade to Talisyn’s throat. “Your magic has always come through for you when you were in danger! It won’t rise to save his life?”

Tal’s gaze met mine. His eyes were calm and peaceful. “It’s all right, Honor.”

“Let go of him!” I screamed. I couldn’t lose Talisyn again. Forever this time.

“We’re all dead if you don’t channel your magic!”

Suddenly, the mist swirling around Talisyn and Kallus exploded. Talisyn and Kallus were both knocked away from each other and slammed into the ground. The knife glanced against Talisyn’s throat as Kallus lost his grip, and as Talisyn struggled to his knees, his hand gripped his throat. A trickle of blood seeped his shirt, but he nodded at me. In my mind, I felt the echo of his words.I’m all right.

For now.

Ebba swirled into his form, with many eyes, many mouths.

“My chance to regain all the pieces of my magic at once,” Ebba said, and all those mouths smiled. “I’ve been waiting to find you together.”

To find us together? But if I had a piece of Ebba’s magic from Lysander, then Zehr had to have a piece too…

Had Ebba hurt Zehr? The thought stabbed my heart.

Or was it possible Zehr was here too, hidden in the shadows?

I had no way of knowing. I reached out for Zehr, but he didn’t answer me.

Ebba raised hands toward both Kallus and me. Many arms unfurled from his body. “I have given, and you have taken. You have been arrogant and sought to control chaos when you should worship me.”

“Sorry.” I shrugged. “The only things I worship are chocolate and orgasms.”

“I have given, and now I take away,” he said.
