Mine, mine, mine…a possessive growl in it, one that made me smile even as he began to drive into me again, starting a second round.

CHAPTER18

Honor

Talisynand I found our way to the inn, but it was the early hours of the morning before we slept.

When I woke in the late light morning, it felt like a dream to see him lying beside me in the cool, crisp sheets, his long, lean muscles at rest, my mark on his skin. I thought about waking him up for morning sex, but my stomach rumbled, and I kissed his cheek and got up to find some food. Sex was great, but so was breakfast.

I found Damyn waiting for me at the breakfast table. A hearty peasant’s breakfast was laid out on the table: crusty rolls, cheese, sausages, berries and baked apples. Damyn was already drinking a mug of beer. He’d taken the table right in front of the fire, as if he remembered I’d said I needed sleep and warmth, but maybe it had just been the one that was open.

“Where's mine?” I asked cheerfully, taking a roll. Smelling fresh bread was heavenly. I hadn't noticed how stale the air was in the bone kingdom until I left.

“Given some of your recent life choices, I don't think I trust you sober, let alone starting your morning with alcohol.” He raised his flask in a toast to me. “I brought you milk.”

“I don't think you can question my life choices, when you decided to invite yourself along in those choices. Who’s stupider, the fool or the one who goes along with the foolishness?”

“But you aren't a fool, which makes it all the more exasperating.” He offered me a smile and a big glass of cold milk.

I shamelessly swiped his mug and took a big sip. I didn't actually like beer, and I especially didn't like morning beer. But there was something pleasantly intimate about drinking from his cup.

He didn't look surprised or offended. In fact, he smiled slightly, and my heart did a ridiculous flip flop. “Alright, my queen, what are your orders now?”

“I can't tell if you'reentirelymocking me or justmostly,”I answered.

He shrugged. Maybe he didn't know either.

A trace of electricity ran up my spine like a palm, and I looked up to find Talisyn standing at the bottom of the stairs. He surveyed the main room of the inn curiously. Then his gaze met mine, and he smiled, and warmth rushed through my stomach.

Talisyn hesitated as he came up to the table. Then he leaned forward and brushed his lips over my forehead. “Good morning.”

Damyn was in my line of vision, which was why I saw the way his face lit up, his eyes crinkling at the corners with the hint of a genuine smile. My heart, which had already been on its way upwards, soared. Tal was mine again, and Damyn was happy.

“Good morning,” I managed, a heartbeat later than I should have. Tal was headed for his chair, but I caught his wrist and pulled him back toward me.

When I tugged him down, our lips met in a gentle kiss. He smiled down at me when he straightened, then he slid into the bench next to mine.

“We need to keep a low profile,” Damyn reminded us.

Talisyn glanced around before he answered. “I don't lay good odds that people can't tell exactly what you are and what you've done based on how you carry yourself, no matter how much you hide your weapons. You might not be openly carrying a sword, but youlooklike you're hiding a sword.”

“Same to you,” Damyn said. “Honor is the only one who blends in at all.”

“Thanks,” I said dryly.

“You're lucky that no one ever sees you coming,” Damyn added. “Even though you're more dangerous than any of us.”

“Good save,” Tal told him.

“I'm not suredangerousis a compliment,” I said. But I could believe it was for them, insane as they were. To Talisyn, I explained, “We were just talking about what we need to do next.”

“Kill off all the Scourge? Starting with their Lord?” Talisyn suggested.

Now I was glad we had settled at an inn instead of me bringing them back directly to Zehr.

“That’s not going to work. The Scourge are growing more violent as Zehr is losing his grip.”

A stubborn look came over Talisyn's face. “Then we kill them all. Once they’re dead, and stop infecting others, we’ll be done.”
