But Damyn was right. I was going to do it, for Lynx’s sake.

“Honor should go. But if Zehr watches her from the shadows, she’s not alone. They’ll certainly bind her in dragonsbane,” Branok said. “But she won’t be trapped if Zehr can grab her and shadow travel.”

I started him, amazed, and he shrugged. “If you trust him… I’ll try to.”

I could have hugged him.

“Are you sure this isn’t just because you want to get your twin back?” Arren demanded.

Talisyn stepped between them before Branok had the chance to respond.

“I’m going to do it, obviously,” I said.

“Don’t be stupid,” Jaik said. “There are about as many holes in this plan as there were when Branok and Lynx ran off like fools.”

Bran’s jaw tightened, a tick in his cheek, but he didn’t try to defend himself. He knew he was at fault. But I understood the sense that drove him, the thought he wasn’t worthy if he didn’t undo his father’s sins.

“Enough of that,” I said quietly. “Bran understands.”

Branok flashed me a grateful look.

But Jaik’s intense golden gaze was focused on me. His dark hair fluttered in the breeze as he said, “Honor. You know how much the royals and I all love each other. I want to get Lynx back as badly as you do, and we will. But… we are disposable ultimately. You, dragon queen? You aren’t. You’re the key to breaking the curse.”

I shook my head. “You can’t expect me to just stand by when Zehr and I can—”

“That’s exactly what we expect,” Caldren said harshly.

Jaik nodded. “Honor, I tried saying this nicely, but let me be fucking clear: I will bind you in dragonsbane myself before I let you run off toJoachim. He will kill you.”

“Don’t be stupid,” Caldren added.

“It’s so nice to see you two working together,” I said tartly. “Being dicks.”

“Well, sometimes you’re stupidly—” Jaik began.

“Stop.” Damyn cut in harshly. “You two already barely deserve her. Don’t talk to her like that.”

The two of them turned shocked gazes on him, looking more like brothers than ever when their affronted expressions were so much the same.

“You talk to all of us like that,” Jaik pointed out.

“It’s different,” Damyn said. “You are men talking to the lady you love. I’m not the one she loves.”

For a second, those words hung in the air.

“Bullshit.” Caldren crossed his arms over his chest. “You love her as much as any of us do, and she obviously loves you.”

My cheeks colored. Damyn looked furious but as if he couldn’t decide what to say in response. Caldren had just taken a tense conversation and turned it on its side—now it was both tense and awkward.

Talisyn ducked his head, barely able to hide his grin.

“I’m going to do it,” I said calmly, even though I could feel my face blazing. It was so embarrassing having my desire for Damyn laid out bare in front of everyone. “I can shadow travel. You can yell at me all you want, but I’m being honest: I’m going after Joachim, and Zehr and I are coming back with Lynx. I’ll do it with you or without you.”

I stared around at all of them.

Grudgingly, Jaik met my eyes and said, “With you.”

He sounded chastened, quieter, after Damyn’s words. Caldren met my gaze and said, “Always with you.”
