The lock clicked, like someone waited on the other side.

A tense silence fell between us. I stared at him. He stared at me.

White-hot fire leapt from his eyes and burned every piece of furniture. It swallowed the room whole.

I gripped the book tighter. “The feeling is mutual…”

His eyes shifted slightly, narrowing just a little more. “Sit.”

“No.”

He came at me, still looking like a king even though he wore no clothing.

I gripped my book and prepared to strike him in the temple.

But he walked right past me, even turned his back on me, and took a seat at the dining table.

I watched him move, my fingers loosening on the edges of the spine.

He relaxed against the wooden back of the chair, one ankle crossed and resting on the opposite knee. He crossed his arms over his wide chest before he nodded to the chair across from him. “Sit.” His tone deepened and his jawline sharpened, like a parent that had officially run out of patience with a child.

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”

“You know, if you just treated me with some respect—”

“Respect is earned here in Grayson—not given.”

“You haven’t earned my respect either, asshole.”

The flames rose, burning the entire palace that he called home. He was willing to burn it to the ground as long as I burned too. “I have a proposition for you—if you would sit and listen.”

“A deal with a vampire? No thanks...”

His eyes narrowed. “With Kingsnake, King of Vampires and Lord of Darkness.”

I rolled my eyes.

His movements were so fast I didn’t see them actually happen. His hand seized me, and then I was in the chair, my ass hitting the wood so hard it would leave a bruise. Then he walked back to his chair with a slow grace, like the ordeal never happened. Hefaced me, arms across his chest, the flames still burning around him. “I have no intention of biting you this evening.”

“Oh goodie…”

His eyes narrowed even more. “You’re powerless here, and you conduct yourself like you’re invincible.”

“I am invincible. I’m the only human who’s immune to the disease that’s claimed the lives of thousands and poisoned the blood of thousands more. You bite the wrong human—and you’re dead. I’m the most powerful goddamn person in the world right now.” I wasn’t stupid—and I wanted to make that abundantly clear.

He was silent, and slowly, the flames around him started to diminish.

“You think I’m a pain in the ass? Honey, you haven’t seen the half of it…”

Silent he remained, watching me across the table, the intensity in his stare remaining but the flames settling. “I can offer you the one thing you want more than anything.”

“My freedom?”

“Even more than that.”

There was nothing I wanted more than to be free of this monster and the other monsters that followed him. “What is that?”
