I just need to pull the trigger and deal with the aftermath.

Leaving her a note on the kitchen bench, I leave the penthouse and drive to my office building. No one is around, I quickly take all my important documents and take one more look around. I close the door behind me and then get back into the car to drive to the house.

I wait in the kitchen for an hour before Kathy comes down. She’s dressed in a pink silk robe, and if I’m being honest, looks like a truck has run over her. I assume, another big night with her rich friends and probably doing coke too.

“What are you doing here?” she asks, barely able to look at me. “Don’t you have to go play Daddy somewhere?”

“We need to talk.”

“I’m tired, not now.”

“Kathy,” I threaten. “I’m giving up my rights to the estate.”

Kathy places her hand down on the counter, clenching it into a fist. Her platinum blonde hair looks ragged and dry, nothing at all like the woman I remember marrying.

“I beg your pardon?” she grits. “We had an agreement.”

“The agreement is over.”

“Over?” she shouts. “So, I have nothing?”

“We all have nothing,” I remind her.

She lets out a piercing scream, grabs the glass in front of her, and attempts to throw it at me. I duck in time, but I’m angry she’s reacting this way. She thinks she’s losing everything. What about me? I built my company from the ground up, and if Icould have my way, I’d keep it. She came into this marriage withnothing.

“Jesus fucking Christ, Kathy! Would you calm down?”

“I will not calm down. You promised me, Hunter!”

“And I’m breaking that promise.”

“Why? Because of her?”

I don’t say a word, keeping my head down. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but for once, I want to do better. I have a son to think about, it’s not just me anymore.

“Bringing a child into this world is a big deal and not something to be taken lightly. I was wrong in thinking it would solve all my problems. And my grandfather was wrong in forcing me to have a family. No one should ever be forced. It should be done out of love.”

As I leave the room, I hear another violent scream followed by more glass smashing.

It’s over.

Now, I just need to make it official.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” The lawyer is sitting in front of me, a new guy named Charles. He’s old, but knows he’s shit. “Mr. Cash, you will be giving up absolutely everything. We’re talking over a billion dollars in assets here.”

I nod, with my shoulders back and chest out. My stare is fixed on him, not a single blink of my eyes.

Charles reads the paper in front of him. “The only thing protected here is a one-bedroom apartment in Westwood and your car. Both of them were purchased with your own earnings.”

“Yes,” I tell him. “I purchased them with my own earnings.”

Charles lets out a long-winded breath and removes his black-rimmed reading glasses.

“Mr. Cash, in all my career, I have never seen anyone give up their rights to an estate they are to inherit. While I understand your grandfather had certain clauses you must obey to be entitled, with the sum of money we are talking about, I’m surprised you haven’t already had a child. I understand you are married, correct?”

I pass over the divorce papers. “About to be divorced.”

“I see,” he says in a low voice. “So, no chance of any heirs, I assume?”
