“This is Dr. Tuller calling from the Veterans Hospital.”

Just like that, my stomach drops.

“Rhett,” I choke out, and he clears his throat.

“Yes, Rhett was injured while on duty. He’s just arrived here, and you were listed as one of his emergency contacts.”

“Is he okay?” I ask, my stomach tied up in knots.

“He’s stable.”

“I’ll be there in twenty,” I tell him before I hang up.

“Rhett’s been injured,” I tell Theo, and he nods.

“Let’s go.”

He throws a hundred down on the table, and we both race out of the diner and over to his car. He drove both of us here today so I don’t have my car.

“What happened?” He asks, and I pause.

“I don’t know. They just said that he was injured but stable.”

Theo nods, and I turn to stare out the passenger window. I wonder if Lottie knows yet. I wonder how she’s taking it.

Looks like I’m about to find out soon enough.

Lottie

When my phone rings,I tense up. My first thought is that it’s Anson finally calling me back, and I’m just not sure I’m ready to face him. I know I’ve been trying to get ahold of him since I found out that I was pregnant, but I’ve secretly been happy that he’s still ducking my calls and texts.

I take a deep breath before I glance at the screen, and then I relax when I see that it’s not him. It’s an unknown number, and I figure that it’s a new client calling me so I answer, forcing myself to sound cheerful.

“Hello, this is Lottie St. James.”

“Ms. St. James, this is Dr. Tuller at the Veterans Hospital.”

My stomach drops, and it starts to sound like everything is underwater. I struggle to take a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart and organize my thoughts.

“Is it Anson or Rhett?” I blurt out.

“Rhett was brought in,” Dr. Tuller says, and I gasp, dropping to my knees at his words.

I’m sobbing, trembling, my arms wrapped around my stomach as I rock back and forth on my knees.

“Ms. St. James? Ms. St. James?” Dr. Tuller asks, and I take a deep breath.

I have to know what happened. I have to know if he’s okay.

“Is he okay? Is my brother okay?”

“He’s stable. Rhett was injured while on duty, and he just arrived here at the hospital, but he’s stable.”

“Oh, thank god.”

I sag back against the wall, my heart pounding in my ears as I try to calm down.
