“Good girl,” Goldie says, and I’m sure she’s flipping Anson off as the elevator doors close and we’re ushered up to the third floor.

I feel like I’ve been thrown out into a hurricane. I don’t know what to focus on or how to get through this. I’m about to see Rhett and have to deal with how injured he is. I’m about to see Anson for the first time in weeks. I’m going to have to tell both of them that I’m pregnant.

I don’t know how to deal with any of this.

Goldie pauses outside of Rhett’s room, and I swallow hard.

“Are you ready?” She asks, squeezing my hand, and I nod.

I’m blinking back tears before I even walk into the room, and I lose the battle when I see my brother lying in that hospital bed.

“Oh, Rhett,” I sob, and he blinks his eyes open, giving me a tired smile.

“Hey, Lot.”

I rush to his side, and he tries to sit up more in the bed.

“I’m fine,” he promises, and I glare at him.

“Obviously.”

“I really am,” he assures me. “I got off easy. It could have been a lot worse.”

“Glad that you’re okay,” Goldie says, giving him a smile.

“Hey, Goldie. How have you been?”

“Good. Keeping busy.”

“Yeah, you and your boss manage to get on the same page yet?”

“Nope.”

“Figures,” he says with a laugh.

He shifts in the bed, and I see him wince. I know then that it’s worse than he’s pretending.

“What happened?” I ask him, though I’m not sure I want to know all the details.

“We were attacked while we were out on patrol. A bomb went off, and I got thrown back into this building… and then shot.”

“Jesus, Rhett,” I sob, and he squeezes my hand.

“I’m alright. They patched me up. I’m going to be fine.”

I sigh, and he squeezes my hand again.

“Where’s Anson?” He asks.

“He’s coming up now.”

“Yeah? What’s going on with you two? You’ve both been weird ever since he got back to the states.”

“Nothing,” I spit out, but even I can hear the bitterness in my tone.

“Did something finally happen between you two?” Rhett asks, and I blink.

“What? What do you mean?” I ask, my voice wobbling.
