“Send me Nicolas?” Kana begged when the mist began to retreat.

“I will try, but I am no Queen here, either, my girl. The mist does what the mist does,” Valda said, chuckling even as she dissolved before us.

Kana growled something under her breath as the mist slunk back under the door, leaving us all looking around the room at each other. Cade was leaning against the door frame, pants slung low around his slim hips and bare-chested.

“You look better,” Rush observed, scanning his golden and blue eyes up and down the vampire. Cade cocked a half-smile, and I wondered suddenly if the two of them might be developing an interest. Not that I really cared. All of my interest was in Kana alone - she could handle whatever came up between her men however she wanted.

Unless they hurt her, and then I would fucking kill them.

“Everything okay, Kas?” Kana asked me, a bit of a knowing smile on her swollen lips. I narrowed my eyes at her.

“No. How about food? Maybe a bath for you two?”

“Jealous?” Cade asked, his tone taunting.

I snorted. “We pretty much lived through it vicariously.”

“Yeah? I lived through it in flesh and blood,” he drawled, cupping his cock over his pants in a gesture so human I burst out laughing.

“Hey. I’d rather have Kana to myself, but since she wants you around, I guess you’re around,” I said, shrugging. I knew by now that my girl would give me time when she could. And she was always worth the wait.

“Always do what the woman wants,” Kana advised, sauntering over to me and settling in my lap. She leaned in to nibble at the shell of my ear, and my cock jumped. I’d been sporting a semi for hours now, and she seemed determined to make me even more miserable.

“And what does the woman want?” I murmured against her neck, my tongue tasting the dried droplets Cade had left like a sloppy bastard.

“Grand-mère told me it was time to ‘sheathe’ the rest of my weapons,” she whispered, her lips traveling across my jaw andsettling on my lips. I frowned against her skin, working out what she’d said.

“Oh.Oh. Fuck, yes, princess,” I chuckled as I got the joke. “Myweaponis ready to enter your sheathe whenever you’re ready.”

Kana tilted her head back to look me straight in the eyes.

Not just sex. The aima ceremony, she said through the mind speak, and I froze against her, my mind rushing with the reality - the finality - of her request.

Do you truly want to? Or is it... is it just the prophecy or the Trials?I had to ask the question, even though I felt her tense up in my arms. She leaned back against the couch cushion, a frown on her pretty face.

“I’m going to assume you only asked that because you’re scared. Because it wasn’t the answer I was hoping for,” she said softly. I grasped for her hand, trying to find the right words as Rush and Cade stared us down with curiosity. Maybe a little suspicion in my direction, too.

But before I could fumble out a better answer for her, the door rattled with a harsh knock.

Kana rose with a fluid grace that told me she was actually mad as hell, throwing the door wide and coolly regarding the nervous-looking guard on the other side.

“The Queen has announced more matches. The next one begins at sundown, in the great hall. Followed by dinner,” he added hastily, giving a half-assed bow and scurrying away like he thought Kana might take a bite out of him.

“Well, with that news, I think I’m going to go spar. My muscles could use a good stretch,” the princess announced in a flat voice, heading through the open door into the hallway without even looking back at me.

“Well, you sure cocked that up, pretty boy,” Cade snickered at me after Kana had gone. Rush merely sighed and headed out the door after her, letting it slam after him.

“How did you know you wanted to take her as youraima?” I blurted, not giving myself a chance to hold back the question.

Cade quieted, his expression growing serious. “I had my doubts back then, too. Not about her - Kana is fucking perfect. But that I’d be good enough for her, especially held up next to Nic. I mean, a turned-human and a princess? Mindfuck.”

I held his gaze, realizing he’d seen right to the issue. I’d been giving the same kind of excuses in my own mind. A commoner thief and a princess had no business together, either.

“Except she chose you, just like she chose me. And who the hell am I to tell perfection it’s wrong?” Cade asked, spreading his palms wide.

“That’s a hell of a point,” I mumbled, a little embarrassed at the turn around he’d taken me on so easily.

“Besides, man. Thatpussy. Best in both worlds.” He kissed his fingertips and looked up at the ceiling, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
