I turned slowly back to Luca.

“Who are you going to sacrifice, wolf?” I ground out slowly, a wave of dread washing over me as the possibilities dwindled.

KANA

“Drop the glamor, Rush,” I told my fae quietly. We’d walked back to the Vault hand in hand, silent and calm.

He trusted me, even though he hated the plan as much as I knew the others would. I looked up into his eyes, searching for the resolve I needed.

“Kas is going to need you. Cade, too,” I said.

“They’ll needyou, love. Don’t be gone long,” he pleaded, and I felt the glamor dissolve, showing us both to the crowd. It took less than a second for Kassian to spot me, and his face said all the things I’d been fearing.

I also felt Vento’s alpha bond slip into place as I dropped my own control over Luca’s mind. He had not, in fact, wanted to agree to my plan. But this was the only way to make him mine - Grand-mère had warned me days ago. We’d fought so hard to avoid it, but I was going to have to let Luca fulfill his blood contract.

Even with all of Khione’s magic flowing through me, I knew of no spell to break what he’d signed in blood.

Kassian was staring up at me in horror, and Luca was beside himself with rage as the inevitable began to unfold.

I dropped down into the pit, keeping my eyes on myaima. The wolf was panting and pacing, but Kassian was the more dangerous one right now.

You have to trust me, thief. My aima. This is the only way to destroy Luca’s contract. I have Khione’s rebirth power now. I’m coming back for you. - I swear it.

I shoved the words into Kassian’s mind over and over as I walked slowly toward Luca, tuning out the rioting crowd.

Don’t take it out on Luca, Kas. Please. It has to be this way, if I want him, too. And I do want him.

Finally, Kas took a single step back, more pain in his eyes than I could stand to look at. He turned away without a word, not wanting to see what would come next. His mind closed to mine, locking up and going dark.

Reaching Luca, I laid a hand on his chest, feeling him calm under my touch.

“I can’t do this, kitten,” he moaned, even though his muscles were practically vibrating with the effort of keeping himself from killing me.

“You will, because I can take it. Let me do this for you, Luca. For us. Trust in the power of Khione. After every winter comes the promise of spring.”

“But what if it doesn’t work?” he begged, and I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, pressing my body to his.

“I won’t fuck you here with this rabble watching, but I know the magic will bind us still. I want you as myaima, Luca. I should never have waited so long to see you. Take me. Forever in my life and my bed,” I murmured in his ear as he held me tight, trembling against me.

“I want it, too, kitten. Myaima. Mine. Just... does it have to go this way?” he pleaded one last time.

“You know it does, but it will work.” I tilted my head back to look into his golden eyes. “Take my blood.”

And I flicked a knife across my neck, opening a line of fresh blood for him right where Rush had fed less than an hour before. My fangs pressed against the smooth skin of Luca’s neck, piercing deep into his vein as his breath rattled through his lips. As I began to suck deep mouthfuls of his blood, he finally gave in and joined me, licking and sucking at my blood.

I felt the magic begin to bind us, and I willed it to be patient. I would take this unfinished business with me into the mist, and the need to complete theaimaceremony would be like a rope around my waist, drawing me back to him from the darkness.

“I’ll be back for you,” I promised, my arms wrapping around his huge, muscular body as far as I could reach. My core ached for him as the magic of theaimabond swelled inside me, but it wasn’t the thrust of his cock that I felt next.

I cried out in agony, cursing the hidden triple moons as Luca shifted out his razor-sharp wolf claws, driving them all the way to the knuckles into the skin of my back.

His claws separated my ribs and pierced straight through my heart, spilling fresh blood down my chest and back. The life force drained quickly from me, and as Luca sobbed against me, kissing away my blood and tears, the mist came.

It was filled with the faces of my ancestors, welcoming me home with open arms.

Holding tight to Luca as long as I could, I felt the tug and pull of my ruined body dissolving and disappearing into the mist, and then everything went dark.
