Edoardo kisses me on the top of my head. “The baby is absolutely fine, and so are you. You’re both going to be fine,” he says with a smile.

I can feel the relief wash through me and my body starts to relax. I collapse into his embrace and take a deep breath. The more awake I become, the more I am aware of the bruises on my body. I have flashes of a memory of collapsing at the police station.

“I haven’t left your side for a moment,” Edoardo says softly.

It feels good to be cared for and I reach out to touch him but my arms are weak. The needle in my hand pulls and it hurts.

“How long was I out?” I ask.

At that moment, a nurse enters with a glass of water.

“Oh, you’re awake!” she says with a smile. “See? You can stop worrying so much now Mr. Lorenzo.”

She hands me a glass of water and I drink as much of it as I can.

“That was meant for Mr. Lorenzo,” she admits. “But you need it more. You’re completely malnourished and exhausted.”

The water tastes like heaven as it slides down my throat. And as I drink it, I can feel the panic start to fade. The nurse checks some of my vitals, and makes a note of it. She asks me a string of questions. She wants to know how I feel, if I can see properly, if I can hear properly, if I can taste properly.

“Don’t worry,” she eventually says with a bright smile. “You can rest now, and we’re going to take good care of you and your baby.”

“Thank you,” I say quietly as I rest my head against the pillow.

“Now, let me go get your doctor,” she says before leaving the room.

I look at Edoardo. He has bags under his eyes, and it looks as if his hair has grayed a little more. More salt is mixed in with the pepper. I smile at him to put him at ease.

“Did you really stay here the entire time?” I ask. “For how long?”

“You’ve been asleep for longer than a day,” he says with stress in his voice. “I was really worried and I didn’t want to miss it when you woke up. I didn’t want you to feel alone.”

He reaches out to take my hand just as the nurse returns with a brightly smiling Doctor Sharp behind her.

“Doctor Sharp,” I greet. “I’m glad to see you’ve made it unscathed.”

The doctor scoffs. “You haven’t. You really need to be more careful,” she says as she checks the vitals report that the nurse just made.

She seems pleased, and signs it off before handing it back to the nurse. Then, she checks all my vitals again.

“So, when can I get out of here?” I ask.

“When I’m happy that you’ve rested enough and regained your strength,” she answers. “And that is going to require you to eat, young lady.”

“Whatever you say, doc,” I tease.

She smiles at both of us before her face drops into a more serious stare again.

“The police have asked me to notify them when you’re awake. They need to come and get your official statement,” she says.

Chapter 26

Edoardo

DoctorSharpstickstoher word, and not long after Aria is awake, the police arrive. They bring with them clipboards and a tape recorder, and more pens than any normal human being could ever need at any given time.

“Would you give us the room?” the one officer asks me.

“I’m not leaving her side,” I growl. “I won’t leave her alone again.”
