“Then who is the man that will be the father of my unwanted grandchild?” he screamed.

“Edoardo,” I answer softly.

“Edoardo?” he asks. “That could be anybody. Edoardo who?”

I look up at him with tear-soaked cheeks. I can barely see him through my blurred vision. I want to run away and hide from him forever. But without my father and my family, I am nothing and have nothing.

“I don’t know his surname,” I say quietly. “But he owns the club we were at … The Hit.”

“The Hit,” my father whispers as if the air has been knocked out of him entirely. “Do you have any idea who that is?”

I shake my head. It’s true. I don’t know who that is, and I’d never been to the club before that night. I’ve not been back since. My father hardly ever lets me leave the house at all. My eyes are downcast when I hear the breaking of a glass that my father has thrown against the wall.

“Father, please,” I cry. “I can handle this, I promise you.”

“Did you tell him already?” he snarls.

“O-of course,” I say, looking up at my father with confused eyes.

I am met with a stare so terrifying that I’m certain I am going to be sick again. I can feel my father’s anger radiating from him.

“You have no idea what you’ve done,” he growls.

He is calm for a moment before another angry outburst causes him to slam his fist into the wall, rattling the paintings around it.

“Congratulations,” he says sarcastically. “You are carrying the child of Edoardo Lorenzo, the owner of The Hit, and my greatest enemy.”

Chapter 4

Edoardo

Myeyesareburningwith exhaustion. I haven’t slept in days. I’ve been working constantly, making sure my businesses are all in good shape should something happen to me, but I know that’s just a paranoid distraction from the problem at hand. If I’m not staring at paperwork, I’m staring at the ceiling of whatever room I’m in, wondering when everything’s going to go to hell in a handbasket.

My mind reels with the possibilities for what might happen next. I’ve managed to get some poor girl knocked up, but she’s not some poor girl at all. She’s my greatest enemy’s daughter. Sleeping with her at all was bad enough, but our combined carelessness has gotten us into a precarious situation we couldn’t have ever prepared for. Everything’s at stake now; it’s not just my life or my empire on the line, but her life and the little one growing inside her as well.

I haven’t heard anything from Aria since her phone call, despite sending multiple messages in an attempt to reach out to her. I sent them against my better judgment, but now that there’s a baby in the mix, I feel like I have no other choice but to keep trying to contact her. For whatever reason, she hasn’t responded. It gives me an uneasy feeling in my stomach, and nothing I do is a good enough distraction from it.

I shudder to think about what she must have gone through when she told her father about the pregnancy. I’ve seen his short temper firsthand and dealt with the ramifications of his anger. I know better than anyone that once he is angry enough, nothing will stand in his way of making the problem disappear. Suddenly, like a light coming at me from the end of a dark tunnel, I realize I can’t wait for him to beat me to the punch, I have to be ready for it in the first place.

I call Mattia.

“What can I do for you, boss?” he answers, and it is exactly what I want to hear.

“We need to bulk up our security at my establishments and safehouses,” I say, wishing that this headache would go away.

“Double? Didn’t we just increase security last month?” he says. “Has something new come up?”

I suppose he’ll find out eventually. I might as well get it over with now.

“I’ve gotten a woman pregnant,” I explain to him carefully. “And not just any woman. It’s the daughter of Gabriele Morino.”

“Holy shit, boss,” is his only response. “You’re lucky you’re not already dead.”

“I know.”

“This is no joke. This could start a war. I’m coming over, we have to talk strategy.”

“Precisely my thoughts. See you soon,” I say before putting the phone down. He took the words right out of my mouth.
