"These feelings. Do you get them too?"

"Sometimes." He hesitated for a moment. "But not like you."

"Like what? Mine are just a general feeling of something good or bad happening. You have always known what it was exactly that was coming."

"I have never had a specific event or person in mind when I have gotten them." He smiled softly. "I'm not sure it matters either way. Do you get them a lot?"

I shook my head. "No, they're rare."

"Do you remember the last one?" His voice was low, almost a whisper.

"Uh, yeah. Yeah, I do. It was when my mom died."

"Really?" Grayson frowned. "I had no idea you were so close to her. I didn't realize you had been through so much."

I turned my head away, unable to look into his eyes. I hated that he knew the pain I'd been through and that he'd been part of it. I felt dirty and ashamed and guilty. But above all else, I was angry. Angry at my mother for dying in the fire and angry at my father for abandoning me. I was also angry at myself, for letting it happen and for not being strong enough to save her.

"It doesn't matter. She's gone. There is nothing that I can do about that, but I can do something about my father's disappearance. I can't just sit around waiting for someone else to fix things."

Before Grayson could respond, there was a knock at the door. I stood and walked towards it. I opened the door and looked back at Grayson then back to open the door.

"Get back, Scarlett," Grayson said, walking past me to look outside.

He grabbed my arm, yanking me backward into the room. "What are you doing?" I cried, struggling against his grip.

"Stay here!" He yelled.

"There's no one there, Grayson!"

"Someone knocked on the door. They want us to split up. That's what they did last time. I chased them and left you alone."

I froze for a moment, not sure what to do. My heart pounded with fear, and I was suddenly unsure of myself. Should I leave the room and try to find what was at the door a moment before or stay inside with Grayson?

"Did you hear something?" I whispered.

Grayson nodded. "Yes, I heard it too. A knock. Come on, we need to hurry."

He released his grip on me and walked out of the room. He checked the parking lot and then quickly returned, grabbing my hand. "We have to go now!" He said, dragging me after him.

Outside, Grayson peered around the corner of the building to see if anyone was approaching. I crept along beside him, trying to keep up without looking like I was rushing. Once we got to the end of the building, we ducked under the awning and entered the shadows of the alleyway that ran between the buildings.

"Who was at the door?" I whispered to Grayson.

"I'm not sure. Someone wants to meet with us. I'm guessing it's one of the dragons from Shadow Crest. I need to know what they want."

"Ok." I nodded, looking around the alley nervously. "Well, I guess we better go."

"Good idea," he replied.

"Wait!" I paused, catching my breath. "Is there another way out of here?" I asked.

"No, there isn't." He sighed. "Not unless you have a spell to teleport us somewhere."

I rolled my eyes. "No, but there has to be another way out. We're in the middle of town. There has to be an exit."

"Scarlett, stop worrying. We're already in a bad situation. You don't need to make it worse. Trust me, there is no other way out of here."

The sound of screeching from above the trees pierced the night echoing all around us. I looked up at the sky but couldn't see where they were. Then, I heard a roar and another shriek.
