I searched the trees for signs of dragons and caught a glimpse of one. Terror shot through me, but I tried to remain calm. I looked over at Grayson and Scarlett, who had just walked into the living room. "We need to get out of here."

They both nodded in agreement.

"You two stay put," I said as I moved into the kitchen. The fridge door stood open. I could see a few items on the counter including some fruit and cheese. I checked to make sure it was safe before motioning for them to follow. We made our way back outside after checking the backyard for any dragon activity.

The sky was darkening and there were no clouds overhead. There wasn't much time before more dragons arrived, so we had to act fast.

"Where are we going?" Scarlett asked.

"There's an old, abandoned farmhouse about half a mile away from here. It should be easy enough to hide out until morning." I thought about how we would get there. "Let's go this way," I said, leading us to the side yard where there was a large barn. The building was in bad shape and most of the roof was missing but it was still solid enough to keep us sheltered from rain or wind.

I went inside with Scarlett and Grayson following close behind. They were able to help carry things like blankets, pillows, and food.

We gathered everything we needed and laid down in the loft of the barn.

Scarlett wrapped herself in her blanket and closed her eyes while Grayson leaned his head against the wall, staring out of the half-boarded window.

I set my bag aside, removed my jacket and shoes, and stretched out next to Scarlett. She pulled the blanket over us, and I felt myself relax. My body grew hot under the blanket, but I began to shiver. Scarlett put her hand on my forehead. The coolness of her touch sent a chill through me, and I pulled the blanket tighter around me.

She placed her hand on top of mine. "Are you okay?" she whispered.

"Yeah, just cold," I replied. I turned onto my side and touched her cheek. Her skin was warm and smooth. I leaned in and kissed her forehead.

"What are we going to do tomorrow?" she asked quietly.

I wanted to say something, but I couldn't think of anything. What if they were watching? Would I tell her what I really wanted to say?

"We have to find somewhere to stay until he is well enough to shift again," Grayson said to Scarlett.

"I'm fine," I insisted, still feeling the pain from my injuries.

Grayson sat up and looked at me. "Do you honestly believe that?"

"No."

"Right now, they think you're dead but they will still be looking for us. We have to get to Kane before they figure out that you are still alive."

"How are we going to get there?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I don't know. I can't fly anymore and neither of you is strong enough."

"Then what are we supposed to do?" Scarlett asked.

"We will simply have to wait until we can find another way." He sighed and lowered himself back on the floor.

"I don't like waiting around for them to find us," Scarlett said.

"Neither do I but what choice do we have? We can't help Kane if we are injured. If we leave now, they will catch us easily."

"They won't know where we went," I protested.

"That doesn't matter either. They know we are looking for Kane now. They will send someone else to look for us."

My stomach twisted at the idea of being captured by them again. Was it even possible to escape from them? There must be some way. It felt strange to be on the other side of their wrath. After so many years of fighting beside them, I never thought I would be fighting against them.

"Can we stay here tonight?" Scarlett asked.

"We are going to have to. We can't go back to my house or to the motel," I replied.
