The night was quiet, and I was getting restless, too many thoughts kept running through my head. I got up and walked to the next room, hoping to find a way to clear my head. There were too many uncertainties for me to know what to do.

These strangers that we were supposed to depend on for help could turn on us at any moment. We might have been safer on our own, but I had a feeling Scarlett wouldn't see things the same way.

Things were getting more dangerous for us, and I worried that she didn't fully grasp that fact. I had to make her see that it was dangerous for her to keep putting her trust in strangers.

Scarlett walked into the room as if she knew what was on my mind. I took her hand and led her to the other side of the room, putting as much distance as I could between us and Drako.

According to Henry, the dark one would have total control of the men who followed him. They would be willing to follow his orders without question and always be ready to prove their loyalty. That sounded exactly like how Drako had described the men he saw at the meeting with Blaise.

If he was the dark dragon Henry was looking for, I feared that we might not be able to defeat him. Not only because it’s been hundreds of years since anyone was able to challenge a Dark One, but also because there weren't many people left alive who knew how to stop them. The few who did, all were either dead or in hiding, never to step foot into another human city again. The ones left behind were either too old, or too young, or too ignorant to even know what a Dark One looked like.

Even now, when humans thought they were safe from such things, a Dark One still existed. It didn’t matter if you were old, young, or strong enough, a Dark One could take you down. It could kill your children or leave you as a shell. There was no escape from its grasp once you were caught. Even the strongest warrior would become nothing more than fodder for the Dark One.

We had to find the dark one, and then, we would end it. If we failed at finding this dark one, I feared that we might not survive the next confrontation.

I didn’t think anyone would expect me to agree with Drako, even though we were both warriors. I was only trying to keep my head above water, to avoid getting killed by an enemy I could not fight. But I couldn’t help feeling the way that Drako did. We were so close to victory!

I wasn't sure how we were going to be victorious on our own. Even Drako didn't think that they could overcome the Dark One. When I asked him about how many men he saw, he said that he saw twenty, maybe thirty, in total. He couldn't really count them at the time. I wasn't sure how accurate that was, especially given that Drako sustained a head injury the same night that he saw them.

More than ever, it was important to make sure that Scarlett and I were on the same page. She was the only one I knew I could trust. I needed to make sure that she knew that she could trust me as well. I hoped that her trust in me outweighed the trust she had in Drako or Henry.

"Scarlett, will you explain to me why you chose to trust Henry?" I asked, hoping she would give me an answer that made sense to me.

"I just felt like he was someone I could trust," she replied with a shrug.

"And Drako?"

"The same thing."

I let out a heavy sigh, trying to stay calm. The last thing I wanted was to create problems with the one person I knew I could trust. Her inability to comprehend the dangerous reality we were faced with, however, was frustrating me to no end.

"Scarlett, what happens if you were wrong in trusting them? You don't know these people."

"Neither do you, Grayson. You have gone along with all of this. Why?" She asked, getting defensive.

"Just because I have been playing along doesn't mean that I trust these people, Scarlett."

"If you think that I made a mistake and that what they are saying are lies, then why have you continued to go along with all of this?"

I could see that I had upset her

"Because I trust you, Scarlett. I am not doing any of this to help them. I am doing it for you. Do you understand me?"

"Yes, I understand."

"Do you trust me, Scarlett? I mean, do you really trust me?"

"Yes, Grayson. You are my mate. You have never lied to me. Of course, I trust you."

"Good. At least we know we can depend on one another."

She nodded, but there was still something off about her. There was no doubt that she trusted me. I just hope that she is not completely naive when it comes to this world. As much as I want to tell her the truth, to help her understand where I'm coming from...I can't. I can't risk losing her again. Not after all we've been through. We may have lost so many things before, but I couldn't bear to lose her once more.

After a while longer I began to realize how tired I had gotten from the day's events.

"How about we get some sleep?" I suggested

"Sounds good to me, but first..." she turned to face me, "Can you promise me something?"
