"She told me to fuck off and took off on her own. I had to chase her all the way here."

"Scarlett's here?" Kane asked, his eyes wide with fear, "She can't...He will find her!"

"I'm sure he already has," I interrupted as things started falling into place, "That's why this was so easy."

"Let's go!" Grayson yelled as he turned to the door, and we rushed to get out of the room.

Fear engulfed me overriding the guilt of leaving Scarlett alone. Once out of the basement, we ran down the hall that led to the dining room.

"Where is she?" Kane growled as he struggled to keep up, weakened from captivity.

"The empty lot down the street," Grayson replied.

The dining room looked empty, no sign of my escort or the other man I knew had to be there. Something was wrong and I stopped to look around. Grayson stopped just short of the exit.

"What are you doing, Drako?" He hissed before he realized we had been spotted.

Outside of the door, they stalked, waiting for their prey. Two shadow dragons, ready to strike the second we walked out of the door.

"Kane, can you shift?" Grayson asked, glancing out of the window at the enemies who stood between us and her.

"Of course," Kane replied, unwilling to admit what the extent of his injuries was.

"No, he can't," I said, "They have been torturing him, bringing him close to death, and then reviving him."

Kane's head snapped towards me with a look of shock and confusion. It was one of Blaise's favorite techniques against outsiders he wanted information from. There had been rumors about it for years, but I assumed they had been just stories until I heard Kane say it.

"If you can't shift, you will be in even more danger. Drako and I will face the Shadow Dragons. I need you to haul ass to that empty lot and look for Scarlett. Watch yourself, though. Blaise isn't alone and he isn't just any shadow dragon," Grayson warned.

"He's the Dark One," Kane replied, "He wants my daughter, but I refused to tell him anything about her."

"Why would he want..." I started to say then reality sank in.

I glanced at Grayson, who seemed to be putting the same pieces together. For a moment, we stood in silence, trying to comprehend what the information meant, but the roar of the Shadow Dragons reminded us that we had no time for such things.

"I'll go find her," Kane assured us, "You just keep them distracted so I can get out of sight."

"No problem," I said.

We exited the restaurant, shifting the moment we set foot outside. Kane stood in the doorway, waiting for us to move the Shadow Dragons away from his location. I flew in the opposite direction of the empty lot, catching their attention. Grayson followed close behind me. The Shadow Dragons chased us, using their fire breath to get our attention. When we got far enough away, we turned to fight, flying in opposite directions. One Shadow Dragon followed me while the other went after Grayson.

I dodged and shot flames toward the first Shadow Dragon I saw as I darted under its belly. As soon as I felt it hit, I flipped over and fired my wings in another direction, avoiding the second shot. I shot my fire breath back at him, hoping to slow him down some. But he still managed to shoot forward, knocking me onto the ground. My wing burned as I tried to push myself back to my feet. With each step, my wing burned worse. Blood seeped through my scales. This didn't feel like normal pain...I looked up at the sky above me and saw Grayson in the distance dodging the air blasts being flung at him. I didn't have much time. I needed to heal my wing before the Shadow Dragon could get a solid hit.

"You're going to pay for that!" the Dragon growled, his tail lashing.

With a burst of speed, I charged forward, grabbing the back of his neck and yanking his head down into my grip. He struggled, his claws scraping the side of my neck as he thrashed around on the ground. I held tighter, knowing this wasn't good. As I pulled him closer to me, his teeth bit deep into my arm. Pain shot through my body as his fangs dug further into my skin.

It took everything I had not to let go or use my fire breath as he thrashed around. The pain was excruciating. It was the worst pain I'd ever experienced. A part of me knew it couldn't last forever, but for now, I was grateful.

He stopped moving and stayed in place. His claws had broken the skin on either side of the wound and blood seeped out of my wound.

My mind was fuzzy as I focused on healing the wound. The dragon began struggling again and this time I was prepared. I shifted my grasp from the monster's neck to his throat and squeezed, forcing a gurgling scream from him. That should buy me enough time to think of something else. I thought of Grayson. He might already be hurt by now. If I didn't get ahold of him soon, there wouldn't be any saving him.

When the beast stopped moving completely, I released my grip. My arms ached from holding on so tight and every inch of me screamed in protest at the sudden change of position. As I pushed myself back to my feet, the world spun around me as black spots appeared on the edge of my vision.

I flew back up in Grayson's direction when I noticed the Shadow Dragon had gotten up. He was following close behind me. My heart sank asthe realization that this could end very badly dawned on me. I had failed. Again. I turned around, hoping to see if Grayson was near enough so I could grab him, but he was already gone.

The Shadow Dragon lunged atme, his claws poised. I dodged, twisting to avoid his attack, but not fast enough. A large claw ripped into my wing, slicing it open and sending me careening to the ground. I screamed, clutching my bleeding wing close to my chest.
