“Lakal awakes,” Axanar said. “We must hurry.”

Kara skipped back to his side, and I watched as they shifted into lions and made their way to the mountain, the winter season bringing another monster awake from its hibernation.

“Why can’t we go and fight with them?” Naaro asked.

“Because the great monsters are things only the most powerful warriors can fight,” I said.

“I thought Mom was a world walker, not a warrior?” Divad said.

I smirked. “Your mother is many things. I think when we return, I shall tell you a story of what happened when she arrived in this place.”

“I want to wait here for them. What if they need our help? We should not leave them,” Naaro said, his face set in a determined stare. I put my hand on his shoulder.

“They will be fine. We must watch over the pride while they are gone. There is plenty for us to do, and they will be back before you know it. Besides, if you stay here, then you are not going to hear the story,” I said. This just about seemed enough to convince him, although he had to wrench himself away. I cast a lingering look to the peak of the mountain, wishing Axanar and Kara well. They always took it upon themselves to drive the monsters back in the great hunt, and they made a formidable team. Still, there was always a part of me that worried for them. I could not allow myself to feel that way though because I did not want my fear to bleed through to the children.

I turned and barked an order at them. The children immediately shifted into lions. As cubs they danced around me, filled with energy. I strode forward and led them back towards the pride, running at half speed so that they could keep up with me. Naaro and Divad ran forward, always pushing each other, challenging each other. Their rivalry amused me, for they excelled in different areas, so one was never going to be superior to the other. When they threatened to get too far ahead, I let out a warning growl, and they slowed, waiting for the rest of us to catch up. The younger cubs were happy to run and play and they often got distracted by all the things in the world that were new to them. I nudged them back onto the path we had to walk and for a moment, I wondered whether they were going to be more of a handful than Lakal, and then I even considered the possibility that Axanar and Kara just used these great hunts to get away from the children for a time.

Even if they did, I did not mind. These children were so special to me, spending time with them was a joy. I loved seeing them grow older and mature, and I wanted to take care of these moments because I knew how brief they could be.

I led them back to the pride and gathered food for a feast, before I took them up to the throne room. I let the cubs sit on the throne as I told the story of how their mother had excelled in the great hunt. Then, after I put them to bed, I went to the window and looked towards the mountains, and I counted down the moments until she and Axanar returned to me.
