Connor opened the door to Hawk standing just outside on a small landing. He was wearing a black Canada Goose jacket with a black skull cap. He nodded at Connor and then handed her a matching black jacket from the same brand. “This should keep you warm enough.”

She pulled it on, and then he gave her a scarf, which she tucked around her chin. He pulled a blond wig out of the bag. “It’s not great, but it should provide enough cover.”

She stared at him. “Seriously?”

“Yeah. We don’t have much time.” He turned to Connor. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay on your own?”

“I called some mates. They’ll be here in under three minutes, according to the last text”

Hawk nodded grimly.

Remy had the wig in her hands and was turning it to get it situated right on her head. She pulled it down over her bun and tried to straighten it as best she could.

“Don’t worry about how it looks.” Hawk pulled a navy beanie with a pompom on the end out of the bag and pulled it down over the wig until it covered her ears. “There.” He stared at her for a second but didn’t say anything else.

“How do I look?

Connor grinned. “I’d never recognize ya. You look cute, but I like ya better as a brunette.” He winked at her, and she found herself smiling back.

“You ready?” Hawk snarled.

“Yeah,” she said as she zipped up her jacket and pulled on her gloves. She turned and gave Connor a quick kiss on the cheek. “Thanks for your help. Please be safe.”

“Don’t worry about me, luv. I’m hard to kill, just like a cockroach.” He winked again.

After Remy stepped onto the stoop, Hawk nodded to Connor, who then closed the door. They heard the locks click in place. Hawk started down the outside stairs, and she followed him. She had to jog to keep up as he moved across the small space and then checked the back alley. It was clear.

“Stay close. We’re gonna go out to the end of the alley and turn left. There’s a car waiting for us at the end of the block.”

“Ernie?”

“No. Just some random Uber driver.”

They made their way to the car and got in.

“Do you know where we’re going?” she asked Hawk.

He nodded but nodded at the driver and then shook his head slightly. He wanted her to stop talking. She let out a sigh. Fine… The silent treatment. That worked for her.

Twenty minutes later, they pulled to the curb a few blocks from her bookshop. Hawk climbed out and checked the street, and then helped her out of the car. He slammed the door, and she started walking to the bodega, which was a few stores down.

“Where are you going?” Hawk asked.

She pointed. “Abdul runs the store on the corner. He and my grandfather played chess together in the summer.” When she walked into the store, Abdul wasn’t behind the cash register, but his great-granddaughter, Maysoun.

“Hi, Maysoun,” she said with a wave.

The woman smiled. “Hi, Remy. How are you? I almost didn’t recognize you with your blond hair.”

She reached up and touched the wig. She’d forgotten about the hair. So much for being unrecognizable. Then again, she was the one to say hello first. “Right, I thought I would try something new. How are you doing?”

“I’m good. I like the blond.” She smiled and then shivered. “It’s cold out there, huh?”

Remy nodded. “I keep thinking winter will be over soon, but it doesn’t seem to want to end.”

“I hear that.” She was wearing a long navy sweater over a white shirt. “Can I help you find something?”

“Actually, I was looking for Abdul.”
