The other man still aimed his gun at Hawk. She would do anything to save Hawk, but she was having a hard time making her body function properly. Finally, she managed to pull the key out of her pocket. She held it up.

The guy with the gun took it from her hand. “Thank you.” Lack of oxygen must be making her loopy, because Remy almost laughed at his politeness. She was going to pass out.

“Let her breathe,” Hawk demanded.

The pressure on her mouth let up a bit, and she managed to suck in some much-needed oxygen.

“I’m going to take her with me to that roof. I’ll let her go when we’re at the door. If you move, I will have my friend here shoot her anyway.” The guy with the gun and the key went first. Once he was on the other roof, her captor lifted her up and she was on her belly on the wall. She swung her legs over and stood up on the other roof. He followed her and then grabbed her in the chokehold again. They moved to the access door to the building and then suddenly, violently, pushed her forward. She fell flat on the roof just barely catching herself with her hands.

In an instant Hawk was beside her helping her up. “Are you okay?” He helped her to a sitting position.

She shook her head. It would be a long time before she was okay. She looked up at him. “I lost the key. My family’s legacy and I lost it.” The key had cost her her entire family. She wanted it back. A deep-seated rage blew through her. She’d lost too much to the society. She wanted to claim what was hers. She had nothing left to lose.

“Jesus Christ, Remy, you could have been killed and you’re worried about the key. What the hell are you doing up here? Fuck!”

She shrank away from his anger. “I’m sorry, but I really needed some air. I was feeling claustrophobic. I never imagined they would come onto the roof.”

“You risked everyone’s lives for some air.” He shook his head and then helped her up. He walked with her to the wall and then helped her over. Mitch took her arm and brought her back inside and down the stairs.

“We owe you an apology. It never occurred to us that you would go out on the roof. We should have had someone with you. We got there as soon as we realized.”

She shook her head. Her teeth were chattering. “M-m-y-y f-fault. S-stupid.”

They stood beside the bar and Lacy came over and put a blanket around her shoulders, giving her a hug in the process. “I’ll make you some tea.” She disappeared into the kitchen.

Hawk came in and stared at her. She desperately wanted him to take her into his arms. To make her feel safe.

Instead, he turned to Logan, who was sitting on a stool, watching Hawk approach “Logan, we need a plan B.”

Logan nodded. “Come down to my office.” The two men went out the back hallway and presumably down the stairs.

Remy was left standing in the room all on her own. Her knees gave out, and she ended up in a puddle on the floor. Her whole body shook and bile choked her. She thought she might vomit. She burst into tears. What the hell had she just done?

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

“Are you alright?” Logan asked as Hawk paced back and forth in Logan’s office.

“No, I’m not fucking alright. Jesus Christ, she risked her life for what? Getting some air? And then the key was fuckin’ taken, which now she wants back. Unbelievable!” He ran a hand through his hair.

Logan leaned back in his chair. “Are you upset because she lost the key or because she risked her life?”

“Both. Neither. I don’t fucking know.”

He grinned. “Oh, I’ve been there. Women. Nothing can screw you up more.”

“What? What are you talking about?” Hawk demanded as he scowled at Logan.

“Nothing. So, what are you thinking? Now that the key is gone, what’s the game plan?”

He went back to pacing. “I don’t know. She wants the key back. I guess we have to try and get it before the board meeting tomorrow night.”

“That’s going to be tough.”

Mitch walked into the office and sank down into one of the guest chairs.

Hawk plopped down next to him. The brown leather chair was soft and comfortable. It matched the color of Logan’s desk. The office was done in shades of brown and Hawk found it comforting somehow.

Logan cleared his throat. “First, we owe you an apology. The roof should have been secured. Obviously, they couldn’t get in from there. You need a passcode. Remy would have frozen to death out there if we didn’t have cameras and alarms. But we should have anticipated her going out there and had someone in place.”
